Fighting Your Way Through

By Eric Richardson

I know those of you who live Downtown already understand this, but I think it's fascinating to take a look at all the ways traffic around here gets snarled on the weekends. Just now I walked by the setup for a Mountain Dew commercial that had 7th Street blocked off between Broadway and Hill. Anyone who's come up Figueroa in the last week has seen the signs saying that street would be closed for a part of the day tomorrow to accomodate the Grammy Awards. The Chamber of Commerce is having a big event today as well, so they've closed several lanes of Flower St. right in the heart of Downtown.

What's my point? I don't know... I like film shoots. I like walking past them and getting to watch. But some days you look at the traffic and you wonder if maybe there's a point that's too much. You wonder if maybe whoever's in charge needs to be a little less quick to block of streets for this sort of thing.

It doesn't happen just on the weekends. How many times can I use the excuse that I was late for work because a film crew closed down my normal route to work? The patience of my past employers have been worn thin by these "excuses" for lateness. After all, how much filming can be going on in downtown Los Angeles? I don't think anyone would believe it if they didn't see it for themselves.
