Two Interesting Motions, If Only From Their Summaries

There were two interesting Council motions introduced by Jan Perry in the last day or so. Both made it in today's Council Referral document, but neither has the full motion text in its file yet. Still, here they are to keep an eye on.

05-2513 (Perry - Reyes) directing the Department of General Services to report to the Arts, Parks, Health and Aging Committee in 30 days with potential sites in and around the Downtown Arts District that could be developed as park space.

Without seeing the actual motion I don't know the boundaries of what she's interested in, but I welcome the idea.

05-2516 (Perry - Greuel) subject to the approval of the Mayor, determine that it is more feasible and economical for the design of a landscaped median island on Spring/Main Streets to be done by a contractor rather than City forces; authorizing the Department of Transportation to amend the existing contract with Land Images to include the design of the landscaped median island; etc.

I assume this means where Spring and Main intersect, by 9th Street. That confused me a bit, since that spot is in CD14, not CD9, but there isn't anyone sitting for CD14 at the moment so I guess she's closest. In any case, I think it's great to get something in that odd triangle of pavement.

I think the motion to let a contractor do the work on the median is a good idea. The space really cries out for it. I'd hate it if the city just did something totally utilitarian. There's a real opportunity here for something with impact.

However, I think a lot depends on the building at the intersection where Angelique's Cafe is. I read recently the building was sold. Whatever is done with the median, it should work with the plans of the owner for the building. If the space were to remain an outdoor cafe, I think something with a fountain would be a good idea. This would mitigate street noise for those eating outdoors at the cafe.

The property owner, the cafe, DLANC and the Fashion BID are all involved in the process.
