Will the Daffodil Bloom Again?

David Kennedy dropped me an email this afternoon mentioning that the daffodil air raid siren from the corner of Figueroa and Olympic had been taken down as part of LA Live! construction.

I had always been a bit puzzled by what that thing was. I hadn't realized the flowery bits were added in 1996 as a public art piece by Michael Tansey titled "Daffodil Metamorphosis."

I went over there this afternoon to take the picture for this post, and was pleased to see that the piece at least looks to be in good shape. As you can see in this shot, the petals are suspended off the ground. I echo David's sentiments from his email:

I hope [it] is not destined for the trash heap. It was, compared to many others, a great piece of public art. Hopefully, a permanent home can be found for it.

It would be interesting to hear if anyone knows what plans have been talked about for the daffodil.

Cool. I had never seen the daffodil one. I am really interested in the air raid sirens, but seem to have missed it:

hexodus: The formatting engine (Markdown) converted the underscores to a request for italics. That mid-word matching likes to screw me up, too. I just fixed it in your comment, though. -e;
