The City's Making Housecalls

By Eric Richardson
Published: Tuesday, February 07, 2006, at 01:45PM

The City must have decided they're a bit hard up for cash. There's a guy here at the office right now who's going door-to-door in the building trying to make sure everyone's up on their City Business Tax registration. Most people have never even heard of the BTRC, but as treasurer of the neighborhood council I'm all too familiar with it. The City has no intention of paying money to people who aren't paying it, so we have to get BTRC numbers from businesses in the City limits that we go to pay. You definitely get a good share of "What number?" when you go and ask for it.

I work in a downtown Los Angeles office building, and someone from the city has come by every year to make sure we have our certificate. I don't think the city is any more hard-up for cash than in recent years.

I assumed as much, but it sounded better thinking they decided to go call in debts.
