Officers Everywhere

You may have noticed more officers of every stripe on the streets right now. You can't go near Figueroa without seeing LAPD officers on motorcycles driving by, and two days in a row I've seen a pair of LAFD bicyclists in the Staples Center area. All of this has to do with the Jewish Communities' 2006 General Assembly, going on now at Staples Center.

Walking back up Figueroa just now, though, I couldn't help but laugh watching this traffic officer practicing his motions in the reflection of 800 S. Figueroa. I stood there watching him wave cars through, give them the stop sign, and various other moves of the trade all while watching himself in the mirrored glass. If only I had a video camera...

that's almost as good as the traffic cop we saw who, while in the middle of directing traffic, deftly grabbed his own package for a quick adjustment.

Eric:

The Los Angeles Fire Department bicyclists you saw were Neighborhood Firefighter/Paramedics working a special as-needed LAFD 'Cycle Team' assignment.

These crews (who on other days work aboard LAFD ambulances) are capable of quickly navigating crowds and accessing remote locations such as public gatherings, festivals and sporting events to provide Advanced Life Support in a timely fashion.

Respectfully Yours in Safety and Service,

Brian Humphrey Firefighter/Specialist Public Service Officer Los Angeles Fire Department

Eric:

The many traffic officers I saw today appeared to be doing pratical field training, this includes practicing their hand signals so they know they are well seen.

Let's combine the traffic officers practicing in the reflections of windows, along with the various parking lot flag wavers, add some modern dancers from USC and some music and you have a Downtown Urban Ballet.

I wonder if this is why I saw 2 pairs of mounted LAPD officers near 5th/Flower yesterday?

I would certainly assume so. I didn't see the LAPD horses, but I know they were around -- I saw droppings several places. Not often you see that on Flower.
