Time for an Update?

Back in the summer of 2005 the City organizers put up banners to promote the new farmers market to be held on 5th street, next to the library. Apparently they worked, as the market has been going strong ever since.

The banners, in fact, are still up. I love their simplicity and it's nice that they're promoting the market, but the fact is they're just a tad out of date. For one thing they say that the market runs only August to October, but just as importantly they say 2005 on them (in little letters inside the black bar).

I'd say it's time for an update, but perhaps there's something new Downtown that we should be promoting instead? The market has had its two years and is well attended, so what gets to go next?

Actually, the organizers of the Farmer's Market put them up, not the City. The City issues permits, and the banner comes down when they expire or when someone else wants to put banners up in that place. Sometimes, if no one takes them down, they stay up until another entity wants to use that pole. Some stay up for years, but you're right: this should be taken down.

Is there a city ordinance that regulates out of date advertisements? If not.. shouldn't there be?

What about generic banners that are available on a standby basis? If an event is over, the generic banners go back up. Maybe featuring a slogan simply promoting Downtown.

I'd like to see a banner with a very classy, historical look, simply reading:

Los Angeles 1781

Each banner could even feature a prominent figure in the city's history. Maybe former mayors. Just an idea!

For another city, my studio did a series of banners that linked history to current residents. Qualifed as public art - and had a shelf life that was could stay in place until the next set came in.
