It was sad to read that an LAPD officer on a motorcycle was struck early this morning at the corner of 6th and Los Angeles. The NBC article linked says the officer suffered a broken arm, so luckily it appears to have not been too serious.

As of 9am the intersection was still closed while LAPD conducted their investigation.

Yeah, Eric - I walk through that intersection several times per day and saw the tape, etc. People blow down 6th real fast quite often and try to beat the light at LA St. I have a feeling that one-way multi-lane streets tend to instigate drivers to go faster, as there is that lack of opposing traffic. Then again, it could have been something else entirely that caused this.

BTW, thats a heck of a zoom on your camera. You must have been standing well south of 6th St, but I can clearly read the "Winston St" sign half a block up... and the side of the mountain looks like it is in Elysian Park.

kenarch: I was standing right in front of the Rite-Aid at 7th. The shot's taken at 210mm, but mounted on a non full-frame dSLR that becomes effectively a 315mm.

Thanks for the camera info... I like your Santee Village (Court) buildings pic as well. From my loft I can see them painting those buildings. They are doing some real cool stuff with color over here. It brings up the entire area IMHO. The ANJAC buildings that you can see from Angelique Cafe are colorful also.

I woke up to this, this morning. It was a horrific sound, and when I saw the aftermath, I was relieved to read that the officer survived.

I've seen accidents like this before, at this intersection. Historically, people have run from the scene. I have my faith restored (like it was every questioned), because I saw everyone run to the officer to see what was up. A lot of the bystanders (including those who were sleeping in their tent) came out to help.

Speaking of accidents, where in downtown was this filming? http://www.tmz.com/2007/01/25/nicole-kidman-crash-caught-on-tape/

Veronica: That's the corner of Broadway and 6th.
