Famima!! Open on 6th

6th street's retail took a big step forward today as Famima!! opened its second location Downtown in the Pacific Center. The first store opened at 8th & Figueroa on October 31st. I stopped by the new location this morning to pick up my daily needs (Mountain Dew and Pocky), and was very pleased with how the store has turned out.

One thing that fascinates me about these two Downtown locations is that they each have entrances both onto the street and into the building. At 8th/Fig that interior entrance is discouraged, with a sign asking people to use the main door. On 6th the interior door is embraced and I saw people stopping in to pick items up on their way to work in the building.

The 6th street approach is much better at breaking down the walls so many buildings put up and encouraging pedestrian flow. It would be interesting to know whether layout or building management determined the differing stances.

More important than doors and entrances, though, is the Pocky. The girl working at the register this morning saw my box of the regular variety at insisted that I had to try the cookies and creme-ish "Chocolate Crush" instead. I did, and I have to say that it's very good.

The Starbucks at the corner of 6th/Grand is also coming along well. I haven't heard anything firm on an opening date, but any time soon wouldn't surprise me.

Can I get the Mountain Dew from a fountain?

Eric Richardson (@blogdowntown) on February 07, 2007, at 01:53PM – #2

Nope, no fountains. I don't think that's going to happen until we eventually get that 7-11. Their license notice was barely up a day so obviously something's on hold there. It's still just listed as pending with ABC.

On a similar topic, what is the deal with the delayed opening of the new Rite-Aid at 5th & Broadway (across the street from a very shabby Rite-Aid)? I was told by an employee back in mid-December that they were set to move across the street in January 2007; here we are in February and there's been no activity in the new location of late. If Famima!! can do it...

The Rite-Aid move's scale might be a bit larger than Famima!! Last I heard (a week or so ago), though, was that the rumor was sometime this month.

in other news i heard somewhere that one of the macy's / robinson mays is going to be replaced with a Target... that would rock... also i heard that that rite-aid will sell produce / groceries.

I have a feeling you probably heard a wishful rumor about the Target. People have been trying to start that one ever since the merger happened.

What, no Pocky For Men?

Eric Richardson (@blogdowntown) on February 09, 2007, at 11:10AM – #8

I haven't tried it, but I have to say I'm intrigued every time I see it on the shelf.

Love it. Now, if only it stayed open later than 10 p.m. When 611 Place right next door gets condoized, maybe they'll mend their early-closing ways.

Target Downtown??? There's Target logos wrapped around the building on the north west corner of 5th & Hill across from Pershing Square. Could it really be true or is it just a tease?

It's an ad.
