Weekend Notes

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — Yes, it is Tuesday. I'm a bit swamped at the moment, so that's why things have been a little light here. I'll post my thoughts on Downtown Living Weekend soon, but that wasn't the only thing going on Downtown this weekend.
Friday night my old roommate joined Kathy and me in walking over to Staples Center to catch USC in the Pac 10 tournament. The Trojans won that game against Washington State to move on to the finals (where they then got spanked by Oregon). The Downtown news is that the Pac 10 tourney has announced it will be staying here at Staples through at least 2012.
Saturday night Kathy and I helped chaperon a trip to the opera. A group of perhaps fifty of us from her school went to see Recovered Voices at the LA Opera. I enjoyed the experience, but I think my quota for opera may be satisfied for quite a while.

They need to change the scheduling so that teams don't play 3 games in 3 days.
It was probably the fatigue that defeated USC more than anything. They shouldn't have lost that badly...

I agree. The same thing happened in 2002 when USC made it to the finals on Saturday and then had to play their first round NCAA game on Wednesday (I think). With three games in three days and then only three days off we got beat by a UNC-Wilmington team that really wasn't as good.

Was it really fatigue? I mean Oregon played 3 games in a row as well right?
I think it was just one of those games where one team was blazing hot and the other stone cold. It happens. Better to get it out of your system before the tournament than during. As Coach Floyd said, I choose to treat it as an "aberration".

AO: It may have been that. The main difference between USC and Oregon's tournament schedules was that USC didn't leave Staples Center until after midnight, only to return for a 3pm game. Oregon was done at 8 or so, and probably left the building by 9pm.
