Adding Hours

By Eric Richardson

Soon to be 24-Hour IHOP Eric Richardson [Flickr]

It may not be something on the scale of opening the new Ralphs, but it was good to walk by the IHOP at 8th/Flower today and see that they're about to be adding some late night hours. No posting of when the change will take place, but given that they're staffing up now I'd imagine it won't take too long.

Downtown needs more 24 hour destinations, though it would seem nice for the Pantry, Denny's and the IHOP to not all be located within a block of each other. People need 3am food in places other than the southern Financial District.

I love encouraging news like this. I've made it a habit since moving downtown to ask businesses how busy they stay, especially at night. The answers have not been consistent. I was disappointed a couple months ago when Starbucks at 7th + Fig shortned its hours from 11pm to 10pm due to lack of night-time traffic. Also, Qdoba says they're usually dead from 8pm to 9pm when they close. On the other hand, Famima at Fig + 8th always has a steady traffic flow until they close at 11pm. I hope when the Roosevelt, Mandel, Brockman, and GLO open later this year, things will level out.

Actually, last time I went to Famima they changed their closing time to 10 PM. Just going with the flow I guess.

The Starbucks on 6th near Famima will be adding hours soon, according to a small sign in its window. It's usually not open on weekends, even. Crazy.

Weiland Brewery restaurant (in the underground mall under the Paul Hastings Building) is open until 2 a.m., and it's pretty good. I prefer Weiland's to Denny's and the Pantry (and IHOP), and I live closer to the latter.

The Weilands Underground is one of Downtown's best secrets. I can't imagine they do very well in that location, though, outside of their weekday lunch.

Mon. - Fri. Famima on Fig + 8th is open until 11pm, Sat - Sun at 10pm. Great news about the Starbucks on 6th! They close so early, it was inevitable.

Brilliant! Although I think I'll still choose Denny's over IHOP, it's good to see another 24hr stop in our ever growing downtown.

You're right, Eric, Weiland is one of DT's best secrets. I've been to Weiland pretty late at night a couple times and they've always had some tables occupied. On the one hand, it's a bad location as relates to most downtowners who don't know it's there. On the otherhand, they have the market cornered on all those workaholics in the City National and Paul Hastings buildings (and although I don't work there, I can tell you that many of the lawyers at Paul Hastings are there all night and/or all weekend quite often).

Has anybody else seen the newest restaurant addition to downtown LA; Riordan's Tavern? It looks fantastic, just a little on the pricey side though.... If you don't know, it's located next to the Pantry.

I walked by Riordan's Tavern tonight on my way to Ralph's. I looked at the menu posted by the door... limited selection: a few typical pub appetizers, $42 steak and a $13 burger. Nice addition to the neighborhood, but not my scene.

You better start patronizing the Daily Grill for breakfast soon, or their morning hours will be shortened considerably!

Angolo -- or whatever it's called --the italian/seafood restaurant next to Wood Spoon is now open for dinner.

Had a nice meal there last week. Good steak.

I can't understand why Daily Grill offers breakfast only on weekdays. If anything, it should only be weekends. They can't possibly get many commuters...who wants to drive in an hour earlier than you normally would just to eat a cruddy breakfast?

I need to try Weiland's....also I think the diner at the Standard is another of downtown's best secrets. Open 24 hours and the food is pretty good...way better than the Pantry or Dennys. Their weekend brunches are good too.

I was in Tiara Cafe on Saturday (they are open on weekends now) and our server said that they will start serving dinner in the fall.

Hooray for Tiara serving dinner in the fall!

Some of the stuff on the breakfast menu is uneven, but the pancakes are delicious and worth the trip. Also, the sausage is quite good. If you know your way around the menu, it's a yummy brunch.

In three weeks a 24 hour french american diner is opening at 9th and olive. They seem to be pretty secretive about it but one of the people at the afterhours next door said its supposed to be pretty nifty...a fashion theme of sorts. Hopefully the food is good. Anyone heard anything about this?

I had thought there were at least one or two restaurants in Chinatown and/or Little Tokyo that stay open until about 3 am for food service.

Anyone know for sure?
