Tomorrow: Play Wii at the Orpheum

Orpheum Sign Ed Fuentes

Saturday afternoon Nintendo is throwing a competition at the Orpheum for the soon to be released Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It's a double win for Downtowners -- the chance to hang out inside one of our great historic theaters and the chance to play someone else's video games.

The first 256 players will compete in L.A's regional tournament, with the regional winner going on to NYC to face the three other regions in a national showdown. Grand prize winner gets "a crystal-coated Wii with a design from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, a home theater system from Best Buy and a copy of the game." Not too shabby.

It's free to enter, and doors open at 3pm. If you're angling to be in that first 256, I might recommend showing up and getting in line just a bit early. Those looking to watch can show up at any time. The Orpheum, as you should certainly know already, is at 842 S. Broadway.

I ran into the manager of the Orpheum at the Bringing Broadway Back meeting and was totally surprised to hear about this event. I would think with more publicity it would be huge. Granted I'm not a gamer, but the Wii is awesome and this event should be pretty sweet.

SSBB has sold 840,000 in it’s launch week in Japan, getting to a million after eleven days. And with expectation at a fever pitch it will definitely launch at number one in America and Europe. But will it be one of the biggest games of 2008?

Daysouffle: Correct, it's today. I'll clarify that in the post.
