Welcome Back
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — I apologize for the rather too long outage this morning. A dirty little secret of mine is that blogdowntown runs out of my living room, and my building, Premiere Towers, lost power this morning at 7:30am. Service wasn't restored until after noon, so in the interim blogdowntown was in the dark.
It's a nice testament to Downtown's power stability that this sort of thing has been so rare, but you can believe that I'm aware of how much nicer it is to run a site out of a proper data center.
As a completely inappropriate aside: I took a shower via candle-light this morning. Not how I expected my day to start.

I thought the world was coming to an end. I think I've been checking every 25 minutes for the last couple of hours. I almost headed home to make sure downtown was okay.

Good to know and great to have you back up. At first I thought the problem was on my end and my computer or something. And I too was checking every 15 minutes. I was "jonesing" for my blogdowntown fix. shower by candle light mmm sounds hot, oh wait..my crush is on the "other" Eric...Eric Garcetti. :)

Hi Eric- glad it was just an outage that took the site down, and at least you had hot water to shower with (once my loft lost that for over 2 days...).
Quick question- what type of bandwidth do you have for blogdowntown.com, and who's your access provider? I'm curious as your site is busy and it's fast. I host a testing site for my clients and I have 768 kbps upsteam through ATT DSL; it's ok but can always use more...

dev: Yes, Linux (Debian, specifically)
Skidrowdude: I have 768k up as well, through Speakeasy. While it would be nice to have more than that, the size of the pipe isn't really the issue. For now I just push larger items from elsewhere (Amazon S3).

Some of us thought you were just leading into a piece on the global coordinated power reduction event...

I thought it was just luck.
