Lakers Playoff Run Demands a Memorable Moniker

The Downtown LA Ralphs is showing early strains of playoff fever.

Downtown's Los Angeles Lakers tip off their Western Conference Finals series against the Spurs tonight at Staples Center. They're one step closer to a possible match with the Boston Celtics, who are up 1-0 in their Eastern Finals series with Detroit.

It seems L.A.'s basketball fever is still waiting for the Finals to really take hold, but maybe what people are instead holding for is a good team nickname. Perhaps this time it should be one that reflects their Downtown home?

For any other city, cars would be filled with flags showing team colors and honking horns for merely advancing a round. Here, basketball fans are much more sophisticated. They wait for the back-to-back drive, as some of you may remember back in the day of Shaq and Kobe, before displaying team colors.

Many basketball fans (and NBA Commissioner David Stern) hope a Lakers Celtics NBA Final rivalry will happen. Still, as Chick Hearn may have said, it's not in the refrigerator and the jello is far from jiggling.

Laker fans can only prepare in the best possible ways. By cheering on the team that will add to a legacy of “Showtime,” that was also dubbed "The Purple Reign" by the Herald-Examiner. They are the 2.0 version of "The Lake Show”. It's the team you know as ... well, nothing yet.

That’s right. This Laker team doesn’t have a nickname. And so far, no sports scribe has come up with one.

This squad with an MVP in Kobe Bryant, a reunion with Derek Fisher, a steal in Pau Gasol, and a mature Lamar Odom are in need of a moniker.

Isn't it time for a Los Angeles Lakers nickname that reflects a home court advantage of Downtown? As usual, the bumpers leading out of commercials and into television coverage show off other parts of L.A., like Hollywood, unincorporated Marina del Rey, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica.

This needs serious consideration. And something like "Lakers Live" has too much marketing crossover with LA Live.

What nickname should be given to this bevy of Lakers from Spain,Serbia, Slovenia as well as Congo , Texas, and Arkansas, along with an MVP who spent his childhood in Italy? They need something to reflect a shared identity with Downtown––both are back in the game to everyone's surprise.

A name like "The Renaissance."
