Election Day

Arda's Cafe (418 W. 6th) is having an election party from 5 - 8pm. Owner Jon Toktas is a DLANC candidate.

It's election day for the Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council, with polls open from 2pm - 8pm at the Los Angeles Theatre (615 S. Broadway). Anyone who lives, works, or does much of anything else Downtown is a stakeholder and eligible to stop in and cast their vote. 59 candidates are running for 28 seats on the council's Board of Directors.

Remember that participation shouldn't end on election day. There are a lot of important issues and great ideas happening Downtown, and DLANC committees are the place to hear about them first. A past DLANC committee idea? Gallery Row, home of tonight's June Downtown Art Walk.

Just wanted to thank everyone who turned out yesterday. Turnout was much larger than anticipated! We should be on the look out for election results mid-next week. And - I promise- I'll get those up at dlanc.com

According to Sandra Mendoza, City Clerk who is running the election, there are over 1900 votes cast.1100 votes by mail and 800 regular on site ballots.

Preliminary results may not be ready until Monday or Tuesday. Then there will be a 5 day period for and contesting of votes (there will be some issues of confusion that will need to be resolved). Then about a week to answer any disputes. Then the results are certified as final, in about 2 weeks.

Huh? Two weeks to count 1900 ballots? What century is this? What Third World country is this?

Eric Richardson (@blogdowntown) on June 13, 2008, at 04:36PM – #5

No, two weeks to account for time to challenge, and time to resolve a challenge. Russ said that they'll have the ballots counted by Monday or Tuesday.

I'm sending out an email based on the original schedule from the Clerk's office regarding the timeline for challenges and final reports....

According to the insert in my ballot, vote by mail ballots went out late. I know the ballot I got was probably not going to counted by a machine either.

City law requires an independent election administer and rather than continue to contract that work out in the past for all the NCs elections, the City wisely realized bringing the work in house would be a long term benefit including to the integrity of the vote counting as the role of NCs increases in public decision making.

I do believe this round of NC elections are among the first the City Clerk is running. And while the bureaucratic gears of the City don't always shift perfectly but for a 200-year-old machine, this project has moved at lightening speed.

DLANC Candidate Preliminary Results

These are NOT final. There are still a small number of vote by mail and other provisional ballots that must be counted. Those votes may only affect a very few tight races. Russ

My rough math says that's only 1673 votes so far -- that leaves 225 to be counted...

Could even be more outstanding votes to be tabulated considering residential stake-holders can cast votes in multiple races?

There was some confusion when I voted; the people at the check in table did not even know that Arts was a category. They tried to get me to also check business, and give me a business ballot, even though the instructions clearly stated that only one category was to be checked. Luckily the people who distributed the ballots corrected this, but there was nobody at the check in area who knew this.

Not that many are left. I was told that there were 1100 vote by mail ballots sent out. However, at 9 pm last night, they said that only half of those were returned. So that is the discrepancy. I think there are less than 20 ballots left. Again, these are preliminary.

Assuming this count is accurate, Congratulations Russell – BH-Resident Dir.
