A Ride Around the June Art Walk

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — There was excitement in the air at the June Downtown Art Walk. New sponsors, new gallery spaces, a new bus, and many in the crowd were from beyond the 110. But there were some bumps in the row that kept it from being a perfect night.
Trucks for a film crew took up parking spaces on Spring, and they brought in detour signs to take up the remaining spots for filming at 9pm sharp, which is now the peak of Art Walk, not the end. And then there was the team on Fig that was like last night’s weather; at 6pm it was warm, and later in the evening things just went cold.

Great photos, Ed, and it was fantastic meeting you and getting a little tour!
# on Jun.13.2008 AT 03:17 PMdowntown art walk may hit its peak of traffic at 9pm, but for my first time on the other side of the counter, so to speak, it was interesting to experience the palpable shift in vibe that happens at around 8:30pm. i don't know how to explain it, but it wasn't entirely pleasant.
i also hear that despite promises to the contrary, the film shoot shut off spring to the art walk bus shortly after 9pm. another film crew kicks dirt in the face of downtown businesses, residents, and stakeholders.
overall, we had a fantastic experience at all three of the spaces we put on shows, and are thrilled to have been able to participate in the downtown art walk as gallerists. and we look forward to many more.
# on Jun.13.2008 AT 03:43 PMGood to meet you Zach. Thanks for stopping by.
Jim, now you know why I am resistant to extending Downtown Art Walk hours. The later crowd really is a different animal, much more about the party and less about the art.
