City Clerk Releases DLANC Election Results
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — The City Clerk this afternoon released the results of last week's Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council (DLANC) election. Sixty candidates were running for 28 seats on the council's Board of Directors, and a record number of people turned out to vote.
Today's official results don't differ significantly from preliminary results released last week, but late counts resolved one tied seat. One other seat (Resident Director - South Park) remains tied, meaning that the Board representative will be chosen by a coin flip with the two candidates present.
While today's numbers represent the votes counted, there is still an opportunity for results to be challenged. That process should be resolved in time to swear in the new board at DLANC's July Board of Directors meeting.

Can't wait to see the coin toss!
Jerard on June 19, 2008, at 05:13PM – #2
I have to say it certainly was an experience to run for DLANC in City West. I wish Mamta all the best for City West.

Jerard: The most important thing is for all the candidates who didn't win the board seats to stay involved. I'm sure you'll continue to do great things for transportation and for City West.
Brady Westwater on June 19, 2008, at 07:50PM – #4
Jerard, we all hope you will now help us invigorate our Transportation Committee.
Jerard on June 20, 2008, at 10:08AM – #5
Gladly. When is the next transportation committee meeting?
Eric Richardson (@blogdowntown) on June 20, 2008, at 10:31AM – #6
I would say let the new board get seated and then have one at the end of July (traditionally it's been on the fourth Monday).
Jerard on June 20, 2008, at 12:19PM – #7
I'll mark that on my calendar.
Russell Brown on June 20, 2008, at 11:01PM – #8
Mary Wentz, DLANC candidate for Resident South Park, who tied in the election, won the coin toss. Scott Bytoff has agreed to be the alternate. Congratulations to both.

Congrats to everyone who won! Looking forward to the next step of positive changes.
And to those who lost... the real action is on the subcommittees. ;)

I heard that the election in the Fashion District will have to be held over as ANT doesn't even live there and submitted an invalid address. Is this true? Has anyone else heard this? If he did do it, why would he do that? Hasn't it been in the papers that he lives at the Eastern Columbia Building in the Historic District? I even think he serves on their board.
Eric Richardson (@blogdowntown) on July 03, 2008, at 03:32PM – #11
I haven't heard any action on that, but your basic facts are correct. Apparently the City Clerk's office did a check beforehand and were satisfied enough to put him on the ballot, though.
JR on July 04, 2008, at 10:34AM – #12
ANT in Fashion District? I thought he lived at the Historic Core in the Eastern Building. Unless he moved???
downtowner on July 04, 2008, at 02:00PM – #13
Oh well, if he is the Resident Director for the Fashion District, that just seems a bit odd. Would be like me serving on the board over at their building even though I live in the Fashion District. How does something like that happen? I'd considered running myself, but I'm looking to buy somewhere in downtown and not sure it will be the Fashion District. Just wish we had someone who truly represented US on the board.
JR on July 04, 2008, at 02:42PM – #14
If it is true that he lives in the Eastern, then it would seem questionable if he could represent the Fashion District Residents appropriately. If someone can do this, then will they represent the Fashion District over the Historic District where they actually live and have personal investments? Will they fight for more parks and such as much for the Fashion District as they would for a park in a neighborhood they are invested in financially and live in? Seems wrong. I'm not saying he personally would do that, I don't even know him, but it seems unfair. Just like judges and politicians have to either recuse themselves or let go of personal investments they are deliberating over.

I just read on the Ginny Here and There blog that ANT had to withdraw as per DLANC, and filed a false address that wasn't even a residence. So he wasn't qualified to be Fashion District Resident Board member after all. That's really strange. Perhaps he tried cause he could run pretty much unopposed??? Read the email from the DLANC here...

JR on July 05, 2008, at 10:44AM – #16
Hmmm, well, glad the DLANC caught it. If anyone here on this blog lives at the Eastern Columbia, I feel bad for you if hes on your board. What he tried to pull is immoral and not cool.
Ginny-Marie Case on July 07, 2008, at 01:20PM – #17
ANT didn't withdraw...thankfully a couple of people stepped forward to let others now. I don't know this ANT guy, but filing false information is a bunch of crap. This guy should be ashamed of himself.
JR on July 07, 2008, at 03:57PM – #18
He didn't withdraw?
What does that mean?
Did he file false information? Is there a special election as per the Mr. Brown on the other blog?
If he is a valid candidate after all, then "sorry ANT" and good luck with your term as a Resident Board Member!!!
Ginny-Marie Case on July 11, 2008, at 10:56AM – #19
In my eyes - he didn't withdraw, but by his silence it seems like he could care less that he was "caught"
There will have to be a special election in the future to fill the spot, but nothing can happen until the election is certified...and there is a challenge (From Robert Lockhart) that will likely impact the certification date.
So - for all those boardmembers who THOUGHT their term was completed in June with the election...we are all still boardmembers...myself included.
It is painfully obvious that ANT shouldn't have even been considered a candidate. He applied for the South Park resident position, somehow ended up on the Fashion District resident position, but really lives in the Historic Core...
I'm still scratching my head over it.

So here's the scoop on the way ANT made a mockery of the DLANC, it's Bylaws, and Rules, and will now waste taxpayer dollars to hold a new election.
No matter how you slice it, he made poor decisions, and exhibited extremely poor judgement. Thankfully, he got caught and is not on the DLANC Board.
The heavily financially invested residents at the Eastern Columbia should be fuming mad that they have an HOA board member who has publicly shown unethical behavior. I'd be concerned too if it was my investment.
EC Residents on July 12, 2008, at 07:07PM – #21
The story hits the "Downtown News" about ANT's lie and lack of character and gets posted on the Eastern Columbia Resident Blog. His response on that blog?
A flippant..."Let the gossip begin"
We think this is much more serious than just mere small talk or "gossip" and doesn't equate to things like "who's dating whom" or "who's showing a baby bump". His integrity has been compromised and his ability to show moral independent judgement was lacking in this instance.
Just because someone tells you to lie, if what he says is true, doesn't mean you do it. That's where your own integrity and ability to think comes into play. Two vital skills needed to be a respectable board member.
EC Residents on July 12, 2008, at 07:14PM – #22
Let us just clarify that of course we don't speak for all the residents at the Eastern Columbia. The plurality in the name only is there to say that there is more than one of us, and there I promise you there is more than 10 of us as well.
EC_RESIDENT on July 13, 2008, at 07:00PM – #23
I think it is all a load of hogwash and thank you EC Residents for stating that you don't speak for all if us Eastern Columbia residents. I have spoken to ANT and he showed me quite a bit of evidence that shows the DLANC, and the Election Division manipulated and lied to prevent him from running in South Park. That's where the buck stops for me. He says his response will be run at citywatchla.com this week.
EC Residents on July 13, 2008, at 10:01PM – #24
HE DOESN'T LIVE IN SOUTH PARK EITHER. HE LIVES IN THE HISTORIC CORE. OF COURSE THEY PREVENTED HIM FROM RUNNING IN SOUTH PARK.
JR on July 14, 2008, at 10:47AM – #25
Wow, sounds like it's lively at the Eastrn Bldng!
Unless "EC_RESIDENT"made a mistake and meant to say "Historic Core" instead of "South Park", it now looks like ANT now tried to dupe a neighbor/friend to his defense with what could and should be considered worthless proof of trying to run in South Park as evidence of his innocence.
The article clearly says he was denied being put on the South Park ballot because his building is in the Historic Core and not South Park. Seems very logical to me as to why they were adamant at denying him his name on the South Park Ballot.
Russell Brown on July 14, 2008, at 11:30AM – #26
Although this has sometimes been portrayed as DLANC or the City Clerk preventing a candidate from running in a certain district, the candidate's own individual situation and participation in the downtown community is the basis of the qualification category they choose to run in.
They choose based on their own eligibility. We have resident, business and other slots for a total of 28 board positions. There are district slots, and also area wide and at large positions that include all of downtown.
The Historic Core residential slot includes all residential candidates within that district's boundaries. Go to www.dlanc.com and click on the bylaws tab at the bottom of the page. Maps of the district are included. The southern boundary of the Historic Downtown district is Olive on the West, 9th on the south, and Spring on the east. Boundary is the middle of the street in most cases. There are also boundary maps for business slots. It is important to note, that the business a resident slots sometimes are NOT the same, since there are more residential districts than business districts.
Eastern Columbia is 849 S. Broadway, north of the boundary that separates it from the South Park district.
So, I guess they are correct that DLANC and the City Clerk would not allow a candidate to run in a slot that they can not qualify for. I had tried to resolve the Fashion District address issue before the election, but the City Clerk was not able to share that information before the election results were known.
ecres on July 14, 2008, at 07:38PM – #27
Russell, i'm trying to follow the boundaries you laid out above. If a resident of the eastern columbia wished to run for a residential seat in which district would they be eligible? thanks, a concerned EC resident
Eric Richardson (@blogdowntown) on July 14, 2008, at 08:51PM – #28
ecres: 9th is the southern boundary, so the north side of 9th would be Historic Core.
