Downtown News Names blogdowntown 'Best Website'

By Eric Richardson
Published: Friday, July 18, 2008, at 04:11PM
Best Of Downtown 2008

The Downtown News' "Best of Downtown" edition for 2008 hit the website this evening, and in it the paper honors blogdowntown with an Editor's Choice award for "Best Website." It's the twentieth anniversary for the awards, and the third time we've been selected in the event.

The write-up is featured under the Best Miscellany category:

This category used to be called Best Blog, and we thought of retiring it after Eric Richardson's blogdowntown.com kept winning. Then Richardson turned the already successful blog upside down, effecting a redesign with serious Wow factor and adding contributors Ed Fuentes and Jeannine Denholm. The result is that blogdowntown now delivers loads of community-specific information and a variety of content, rendering it much more than the standard I-went-here-and-did-that-and-then-ate-this blog. These days, Richardson's longtime goal of making blogdowntown a source for community conversation is working better than ever, as eager Downtowners debate, sometimes fiercely, issues such as neighborhood council elections and the proposed Pershing Square renovation - the latter drew a staggering response, with more than 100 comments. At blogdowntown.com.-Jon Regardie

Consider us flattered.

Be sure not to miss the fact that two frequent blogdowntown commenters scored big for filling out their voting forms.

Grand Prize: Nic Cha Kim will receive a night out on the town with a complimentary two-night stay in executive-level accommodations at the Wilshire Grand Los Angeles, dinner for two at one of the hotel's four restaurants, $200 spending cash, dinner for two at Morton's The Steakhouse, two tickets to the Downtown Comedy Club and a Los Angeles Conservancy walking tour.

A Nintendo Wii: David Kennedy.

Best Website or Best Local News Source? on July 18, 2008, at 07:39PM – #6

Why didn't it win the editors' "Best Source of News Leads for the Downtown News" category?

^I agree. You keep up with BlogDowntown and you don't need to read Downtown News or the LAT really.. by the time it gets to print it's old news. ;P

The redesigning of your blog was brilliant in the way you responded to the growing needs of the ever growing downtown community Eric. There is something for everyone. Job more than well done. Congratulations.

Congratulations to blogdowntown of course; kudos also to all you DTLA community members whose constant and interesting comments make a good thing just that much better.

Congrats to you Eric, the rest of the Blogdowntown team, and to all who contribute by commenting. Your blog is excellent. I particularly like (1.) that you often include a little interesting history in your posts, (2.) the sometimes heated discussion/ comments, (3.) the new "active stories" feature, and (4.) the idea that those who make decisions that affect downtown respect the community enough to look here to get the pulse of what we are thinking. I think of the 2nd street widening that was halted, the Pershing Square misguided use of funds that was halted, and.... Your blog makes a difference by giving the community a voice and thats a good thing. Thanks.
