AEG has signed a contract to put solar panels capable of generating 512 kilowatts of power on the roofs of Staples Center and the Nokia Theatre. The system, to be produced by Solar Power, Inc, is slated to be up and running in December.

The iconic Staples Center rooftop will be getting 345 KW of solar power, via 1,727 solar modules. The next-door Nokia will get 836 modules, providing 167 KW.

Industry paper Fab Tech has a blog write-up on the deal. They note that the panels will weigh approximately 32 tons, a big number but less than similar systems might have run. At 512 KW, the solar system will provide for less than 5% of the two venues' power consumption.

Installation is scheduled to start in October.

That is an awesome idea. More companies should do that with the large roof tops they have.

less than 5% ? That's enough for lighting section 304 of the nosebleed seats. Did they do a cost/ benefit analyses or is this just for show?

Hey PW, does it really matter? The fact is that they are taking the steps needed to promote green systems and that in itself is a great payoff. I have solar panels on my roof, do you? thought so.

They ought to paint the roofs white, while they do it, as well. All roofs should go white: mission tile, shake, standing seam metal, asphalt shingle, thatch, whatever. Gardens needs to go white too, only white flowered varieties be planted. NO MORE RED! A little bit of blue is o.k. though.
