DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — At 5th and Hill today, a crane resumed the process of lifting steel to the top of the 1924 Pershing Square building.
As Angelenic reported last month, the building owner hopes to turn the roof and basement into nightlife venues. Two additional levels are being built onto the building's roof.
The building, located at 448 S. Hill, opened in September of 1924. Its basement contained the Thompson Coffee Shop and Grill, a 9,000 square foot coffee shop done in "Old English" architecture and color schemes.
In March of 1925, Brooks Brothers opened a 10,000 square foot store that occupied the building's entire second floor. The store was the company's fifth in Los Angeles.

Behind the crane, on the other side of Fifth is where the Buckeye Saloon was constructed in 1907, architected by John Krempel. It was the Maier Brewing Company that built/owned the building, perhaps an in-town retail outlet for their brewery on Aliso Street, the latter - originaly the site of the Vignes adobe and winery. The remainders of the saloon were demolished ten or so years ago.
