DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — On Monday, the LA Opera is holding a press conference to announce what it says will be "the largest cultural event to come to Los Angeles since the 1984 Olympics." Elsewhere it's referred to as "a major citywide cultural event," and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is slated to be on hand for the announcement with representatives from the Opera and fifty Southern California cultural and educational institutions.
So what it is?
That's the part that will only be known Monday, but the press hints that the event will occur in conjunction with the LA Opera's presentation of the four-opera Ring Cycle. Back in 2006 the company announced its plans to put on the ambitious set of performances. They kick off in March with "Das Rheingold."
We'll have more details Monday, but in the meantime feel free to engage in operatic speculation.

what downtown needs is a mainstream musical like "lion king","wicked", or"phantom of the opera" in one of its many theaters whether its on Broadway, LA Live, or here.

A Ring Cycle will bring in a ton of high spending cultural tourists - and it will be a great event for local opera lovers. Plus while we do need Broadway musicals in our Broadway theaters (and LA Live does not have a single Broadway-sized house, all they can do is an occasional short run concert version), having world class opera will bring the same people to Downtown we need to support our Broadway theaters.

That would be great if they did an economic stimulus package like their neighboring playhouses have done.
