A Clear Day in L.A.

By night, the skyline as seen from City Hall's 28th floor observation deck.

Wednesday was a remarkably clear day, so how convenient that I spent it taking photos of Downtown and the city from two of the best vantage points the neighborhood has to offer.

From the L.A. Live tower one could see all the way to the ocean, making it easy to understand why ultra-luxury condos continue to sell. The nighttime view from City Hall was just as striking, with city lights giving roadways that magical yellow glow.

Combined, they offered views of the Downtown skyline from its two poles, with L.A. Live's tower rising to the south and City Hall to the north.

It's hard to argue against views to the sea, but there's something about that nighttime view from above that just can't be beat in my book. City Hall may not be quite as tall as the Ritz, but it's no slouch when it comes to providing a platform for L.A.'s best views.

Very enviable photographs. The perspectives of Downtown from the Ritz tower are fresh. The nocturnal shot of the Financial District with Disney Concert Hall was my favorite.

Zach: I was there covering the topping off ceremony. Every once in a while, this sort of thing happens to be a perk of the job.

Will there be a viewing platform open to the public when the hotel opens? If not, that's a shame and a lost opportunity. I'm sure many visitors and tourists would pay to see such a view.

Those top floors are all condos, so I don't that's happening unless some enterprising individual buys up the penthouse.
