Win Tickets to See Boyz II Men at Club Nokia on Friday
Boyz II Men
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — Looking for something to do this Friday night? Why not take a step back into the 90's and catch Boyz II Men at L.A. Live's Club Nokia?
Tickets for the show are $40, but we want to send you for free.
Though certainly most famous for their past work, the group's actually up for two awards at February's 51st Grammy Awards. Their song "Ribbon In The Sky" was nominated for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals, and their album "Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA" was nominated for Best R&B Album.
Also on the bill for Thursday night is L.A. band Jupiter Rising, whose 2006 single "Go!" was a strong performer on the Billboard dance charts and made appearances in numerous TV shows and commercials.
Courtesy of Goldenvoice, we've got five pairs of tickets to give away. To win, just leave a comment with a favorite Boyz II Men memory or song.
Contest ends at the end of the day on Wednesday. Make sure you leave a valid email address (or log in using your Facebook account) so that we can contact you if you win. We'll put the names in a hat, pick five winners, and let you know the good news.
Update: I had originally put Thursday, but the show's on Friday.

Hey BlogDowntown! SEND ME TO SEE BOYS II MEN!!!!
The most memorable Boys II Men song for me has to be "Down on Bended Knee".
My cousins and I have performed this song many times in our childhood, whether it be our teenage boy cousins lip-syncing this song in the living room as all of the girl cousins and aunties pretended to scream and swoon like crazed fans, or 4 girl cousins lip-syncing the song ourselves while choregraphing our own "bended knee" dance routine. Boys II Men were a staple in every 90's child's musical lives. They made us blush with their juicy, passionate songs and taught us how to love a little better. Send me to their show, please!

Send Michelle please! She seems to deserve it. :) She's got my vote.

Slow dancing to Boyz II Men at a middle school dance---where you had to be at least 6 inches apart.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UT1BB4Vj7TI
In retrospect, it's a very sad song and not really a love song in the dancing sense, but nobody seemed to have informed our 7th grade class.

Boyz II Men! Motownphilly is the first song I can remember that I memorized all the lyrics to and sang in the shower on a daily basis! And I was only a kid! Please send me to the concert so I can sing along with them again (although this time, I'll make sure to be fully clothed!)

I remember being in middle school and going to the local Sam Goody during Christmas time and buying a Sony Walkman portable CD player and Boyz II men II, my first cd. My favorite song on the album, Yesterday. I had no idea who the Beatles were at the time but they've since gone on to become my favorite band of all time and a huge influence in my life.

motownphilly, no doubt! it brought in new jack swing and although i admit to being a fan of their sappier work, motownphilly was still one of their best works!
not to mention they spawned another bad creation, another pre-teen favorite of mine. yay! i would LOVE to go see them. i'd even take public transportation there!

End of the Road, for sure. I mean, it was the best slow dance song at ALL the junior high dances!

I remember taping the "Motownphilly" video on my VCR so I could read the scrolling subtitles on the bottom of the screen. "Coming soon: The Alex Vanderpooleera"

Doom doom doom da dop Doom doom doom da dop Da ya ya ya dop, da dop, da oh oh oh
Boyz II Men have seriously lived up to their name over the years! Their music is iconic and each one of their songs holds dear to many.
From my singing On Bended Knees to my high-school sweetheart. Repeatedly playing I'll Make Love to You while getting it on. To breaking up with my girlfriend and playing End Of The Road. There's not a moment nor song that Boyz II Men haven't influenced my life.
What I think a lot of music has lacked these days that Boyz II Men have repeatedly done is have influential and touching music. I think the song Mama, off the Soul Food Soundtrack, has to be the most touching and memorable song.

my first dance with a boy was in 6th grade and we danced to "on bended knee." i'll never forget that day :)

"Well, I can't sleep at night without holding you tight Girl, each time I try I just break down and cry Pain in my head oh I'd rather be dead Spinnin' around and around"

Boyz II Men have had a strong influence on my life for the past 18 years.
For me, my love affair with Boyz II Men started with Motownphilly which then preceeded to "It's So Hard to Say Good bye to yesterday." I remember having to move right around the time that Boyz II Men released "It's So Hard.." and at that point I really related to the song. It was really tough for me to constantly be moving as a child and having the opportunity to really relate to a song helped me get through these difficult times in my life.
Continuting my love affair with Boyz II Men was the release of the II album. I feel that Boyz II Men did a wonderful job in compiling such a successful album, where I feel that every single song from the album has had a lasting impact on the current R&B industry. Although Boyz II Men did a phenominal job with Cooleyhighharmony and set the standards for some ridiculously amazing new jack swing - I feel that with II, Boyz II Men took their skills to another level.
Every aspect of my adolescence can be correlated with some sort of song on the II album: my first kiss - on bended knee, my first slow dance - i'll make love to you, ending of my "relationship" - water runs dry.. etc etc.
I could talk forever about Boyz II Men but other songs that also had an impact on my life where : 4 Seasons of Loneliness, A Song for Mama, their version of "can you stand the rain", "pass you by" and many many more!
Throughout the course of the 1990s and well into the 2000s, Boyz II Men have had a continual impact on my life and I look forward to hearing more from them.

Motownphilly was my favorite. Wasn't too into the slow songs, but my wife digs 'em.

I remember playing A Song for Mama every Mother's Day morning on the cassette stereo in my family's living room, and cooking breakfast for my mom. She could count on that each year until I moved to college. She didn't know much about Boys II Men, but she sure did know that song!

I remember singing "I'll Make Love to You" with my friends in our parents' cars each time they drove us some place. One parent got really upset and we later had to change our talent show performance song to "On Bended Knee". It was a good thing though b/c another group performed to "I'll Make Love to You". Now that I think of it, that really was a bad song choice for an elementary school talent show :P

When I think of Boyz II Men I MELT. Their music is the definition of ‘Slow Jams’ for my generation. Their music has continually contributed to memories all throughout my life. From the first time I heard the smooth crooning of ‘I’ll Make Love to you’ in 1994, in my living room on a Saturday afternoon while my parents playfully danced, to the sad melancholy melody of ‘One Sweet Day’ that played at a friends funeral in 2002.
If I had to pick just ONE memory out of hundreds I’d say…. I lost my virginity to ‘I’ll Make Love to You’. SO cliché but I don’t think I need to divulge anything else.
PICK ME!!!
Gillian on January 14, 2009, at 10:16AM – #18
I think I'd still be a virgin if it weren't for "I'll Make Love to You" - so there are probably a few guys I should be able to call up to sponsor my ticket, but for some reason they never pick up...

Nathan, Michael, Shawn and Wanya...
With their crazy harmony and melodies, I too, like the comments before me, fell in love over a decade ago with Boyz II Men.
I wish I can say I have insane talent and skills to sing their song at a local talent show, but I did not.
Or I wish I can say I owe my first dance or my first relationship to a Boyz II Men song, but I can not.
Or that during tough times and breakups, their songs provided comfort, but I will not.
I wish that I did all of the above things, trust me...this comment would have gone a lot better...
What their songs transcend to me, what Boyz II Men have always meant to me, is the hope that talent does still exist and that their voices are that of a generation lost.
And as always, I remind myself via youtube and catch a glimpse of this talent, but the crappy video doesn't do them justice.
Please let me see this talentend group perform, because even if it is sans Michael, it's never too late to keep the hope alive.

Boyz II Men -- how do you choose just one song as your favorite? Whenever I listen to their songs, all my junior high school memories resurface, whether they were happy ones or sad ones. If I had to choose one song that always gets me, although all of their ballads are AWESOME, I would have to say "One Sweet Day" with Mariah Carey. It's a tear jerker, so endearing yet so sad.

BOYZ II MEN!!
I have "A Song for Mama" as the ring tone for my momma when she calls!
Like Linda said, its too hard to choose just one as a favorite. All of their songs just make me melt. I would love to see them live! I don't know any other group with such amazing talent! they just don't make them like they used to anymore.

i have fond memories of boyz II men when i was younger. i would always scope out mtv to wait for the next play of the "it's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday" video, complete with the clips of "boomerang." then years later, when i discovered the song was also on the soundtrack to "cooley high," it rekindled my affection for boyz II men. i pulled out my old cd's and gushed over them once more. the love hasnt stopped since, even in their solo efforts. my fav solo song is by shawn, called "visions of a sunset" for the mr. holland's opus soundtrack. i highly recommend it!
another vivid memory is from the song "i'll make love to you." it was a bit too risque for me dance to at the school dance, but the fact that boyz II men sang it, it was perfectly fine to sing along instead with all my friends. so there we were, howling our rendition of "i'll make love to you" like a pack of wolves to the entire school dance. :)

is that the best you guys have? step aside...
my husband jim and i first got busy to boyz ii men's "i'll make love to you" at full-blast on a saturday night, right above pete's cafe. the music still struggled to be heard above our sweaty groans and the drunks on the patio at pete's cackling drunkenly below. the neighbors had called the cops, and they were pounding on the door, pounding along to the beat, which we were also trying to match with our wild thrashing.
suddenly, at the song's and our climax, the bed heaved, groaned, then gave way just as the cops burst through the door. jim and i sang along loudly, hell- defiantly, as we dressed hastily and the cops handcuffed us,
"I'll make love to you Like you want me to And I'll hold you tight Baby all through the night I'll make love to you When you want me to And I will not let go Till you tell me to"
yesterday was our two-year wedding anniversary. that's two years of wedded bliss, aided by boyz ii men at the most critical juncture - the beginning.

I love Boyz II Men! End of the Road is favorite for me-- my closest friend in high school and I went through a rough patch our last year and strangely enough reconnected through jokingly singing this song at a party.
Great blog, keep it up :)
