LAPD Iced by LAFD in Broomball Challenge II

REACHING IN: Players are armed with old brooms covered with duct tape are standard issue, and made some odd bounces with the "puck."
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — While relationships between Recreation and Parks and the Pershing Square Park Advisory Board were being smoothed over, fierce competition was underway upstairs on Pershing Square’s ice rink.
The 2nd Annual Broomball Challenge pitted LAFD against LAPD, with proceeds benefiting the LAFD Widows, Orphans and Disabled Fireman’s Fund and LAPD Central City Boosters. At stake were bragging rights and, for the first time, a winners cup that the victorious team will display for the year.
It wasn’t a pretty game.
It’s just not easy clearing a rubber ball on a breakaway wearing athletic shoes armed with a broom covered in duct tape. Clearly, LAFD has a home uniform advantage -- the department's comfortable working while wearing helmets and gloves. They beat LAPD by seven goals, 12-5.
As for the victory cup, it's a nice touch. But frankly it needs a catchy name.
Pershing Square's L.A. Kings Downtown On Ice ends on Martin Luther King Day, January 19.

I saw the game. The Police Dept. need to bring in some ringers for next year. Note that even though it's not mentioned nor is there a picture of her, this is another program that Louise Capone the director of the park brought to the downtown community working with our local Fire Dept. and LAPD.
