A special edition of the monthly Skid Row walk will take place on Wednesday night, with an appearance from Councilmember Jan Perry and new LAPD Police Captain Blake Chow.

This week's Skid Row Walk will include a special behind-the-scene presentation of the high-tech security cameras CCEA installed in and around Skid Row. Attendees will have a chance see the cameras in action from a special monitoring room inside the Central LAPD police station.

The walk begins and ends at the courtyard of the Midnight Mission at 601 S. San Pedro St. (The courtyard entrance faces 6th Street)

Walkers will assemble at 6 and begin at approximately 6:15.

Skid Row Neighboorhood walks take place rain or shine.

This is something I would have wanted to join, but six hours notice just doesn't work. I read this blog almost every morning, so I didn't see this post until now (Thu a.m.). Any way that event information can be posted a day or two in advance, rather than a few hours in advance? Just asking...

I guess I am late to the party, but what are these cameras for exactly? I may be wrong in assuming the cameras are to film homeless people and monitor drug activity?

If however, these cameras are in "some way" a means to actually HELP these people, then I am all for it. But if the cameras are simply a means to arrest homeless, helpless, sick people than I really don't see that helping the situation. If someone can enlighten me I would be happy to hear.

The dumping of homeless people and criminals in Skid Row by hospitals and outside law enforcement agencies was a practice that had occurred for more than 30 years anecdotally. When cameras began to be installed a few years ago, the dumpers were caught and prosecuted. This significantly helped the residents of skid row by preventing outsiders from releasing predators into the neighborhood.

Thank you Bert for enlightening me in on why we need cameras down there. You gave me (and everyone) a well written response!
