Co-owner Archie Hernandez trains a barista on Spring for Coffee's new register.
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — In perhaps the urban equivalent to the drive-through, Spring for Coffee opened last week in a Spring street space that's just a touch over 200 square feet. While it isn't a place to sit and read the newspaper, the cafe, just north of 6th street, is well-placed to serve the pedestrian commuter.
Early business has been good, perhaps in part thanks to the freshly brewed Intelligentsia coffee. Co-owner Archie Hernandez explained that all the coffee the shop serves has been harvested within the past 3 - 6 months and freshly roasted within the last week. He explained as he served a fresh latte, "This coffee you are drinking was roasted last Thursday." He went on to say that if they can't get freshly harvested coffee they'll look for other distributors.
The freshness extends to the pastries as well. Hernandez advised that the pastries are delivered daily at 5:30am from Santa Monica. "We don't serve day old pastries."
Business partners Hernandez and "Maru" Nagano are trying their fresh coffee business concept out Downtown before possibly expanding within another year. Asked if we'd get another location in downtown, he said it was possible, perhaps in Little Tokyo.

Cool concept- I never stay at a coffee place- always dashing on somewhere with latte in hand.
And good to see your work here too, Pamela- I enjoy your reviews!

It was the best latte I'd had since I gave away my espresso machine. LOVE LOVE LOVE the organic milk!

The best espresso drink I've ever had in LA. Fantastic coffee, fresh milk, and lovely, glassy foam! Reasonably priced considering the quality, too. Well done!

My husband is really, really picky about his coffee and he says it's great. The staff are also super friendly and very customer service oriented. A great addition to the neighborhood.

I bought the Equator Celebes this morning. I like it. The guys were cool and one really was passionate about the place. I could tell in his summarization of the place and its plans for the future. Nice looking place too.

Coffee is great (not bitter, I had the drip) but will come back soon for espresso.
Friendly staff too, and they remember my name! How rare is that nowadays?

Their triberry scone is great. Solid Americanos, which in my book, is the mark of a great coffee shop.
