A colorful sushi bar inside Octopus, newly opened at 7th and Flower.

The Roosevelt's corner of downtown is getting crowded. At 7th and Flower, where you can catch the Metro, a small Famimia!! recently opened and Marie's Coffee is making a return after having been closed during construction on the building.

Also a returner, but under a new name, is Octopus, a Japanese restaurant by the owners who had run California Roll & Sushi.

The casual upscale Japanese Fusion restaurant opened last Wednesday, featuring an expanded menu with some interesting dishes. Premium creations include the Mexican Roll (Spicy Crab, Avocado, and jalapeño) and the Snow Roll (Avocado, cream cheese with baked white fish).

"We have been packed for lunch since opening," says manager Young Kim. "We had many regulars waiting for us to come back." Octopus is the 8th "branch" to open, and the club-like look and lighting is designed to fit into the new Downtown.

The increase in square footage has allowed significant upgrades. The bottom floor is designed for the lunch and happy hour crowd, while the loft-like second floor becomes a slightly more formal dining area.

Ocotopus / 729 W. 7th / (213) 745-5580 / Monday - Thursday, 11am to 11pm; Friday, 11am to midnight; Saturday, noon to midnight; Sunday, noon to 10pm

I stuffed myself there last night. It was fantastic! We got great food, and great service. The staff is very friendly, too. I'll definitely be back.

was it expensive, Reed?

Benjamin,

Prices were not bad in my opinion, and right now they are offering half price on sushi. I'm not sure how long they'll be doing that.

i've been to the Octopus in Brea many times, and for the last two years they're still offering half price sushi. So maybe they will do the same here.
