Rickey "The Pirate" Taylor at the corner of 5th and Main.

Rickey Taylor is getting a housewarming party, and you're invited. Known around Downtown as "Rickey the Pirate," Taylor was on the streets for thirty years before getting a residence at the Rainbow Apartments two weeks ago.

The housewarming, to be held at The Exchange (114 W. 5th), is designed to help Taylor get the household items needed for his new place.

Russ Brown, who helped Taylor get his new home, sends the following information:

Tuesday, May 5th, will be a new style urban barn raiser to help Rickey set up his new home at the Rainbow. Skid Row Housing Trust’s new Rainbow apartments include basic furniture of a bed, desk chair, private kitchen and private bath. However, all other supplies that one would need to set up an apartment are needed. Groceries, kitchen supplies, towels & linens, personal toiletries, cleaning supplies and other household items are needed. We will also be raising funds to help Ricky manage other expenses to get him up and running.

Rickey’s family including his Mom will be in attendance. She is fixing peach cobbler for the neighborhood. All feel free to bring snacks, appetizers and deserts to this neighborhood event.

DJ Peter Miller will be spinning tunes. Donation beverages are available. Come meet your neighbor and help Rickey get a new start.

The event will run from 6 - 10pm. For more information, call Brown at 213-999-0379.

All in attendance should dress up as pirates.

Don't know how I feel about that facebook link... seems kind of exploitive and lame. "Hey look, I took a picture of a homeless guy and put it on a social networking site. He looks like pirate. Hur-hur..."

Not sure how I feel about it... can't say I'm into it though. Looks like something some frat kids would put up... seems like they didn't even know his name was Rickey.

My take on it at least.

Anyway, very happy to see Rickey getting off the streets again. I wish him all the luck in the world. The guy has a heart of gold.

This is really cool. And Ian, for those of us who have lived or hung out in the historic core, the pirate guy is a fixture. THis is FAR from lame and even farther from a frat kids farse. Pirate guy is almost always smiling and pleasant. He's always been a curiousity to me - who is he, does he live anywhere? I see him ALl the time. Russ - awesome that you helped get him a home and fabulous that you all are having a housewarming - very cool. This in itself is SO downtown and why it's such an incredible place to live.

Argh!! Congratulations, Rickey. A home at last. Hopefully we'll still see you out and about a bit.

Karin: I think Ian was referring to the Facebook page specifically, not the housewarming event.

This is another Rickey the Pirate (also spelled incorrectly) facebook page.

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1433478752&ref=ts

And I can tell you that Rickey actually does check THIS page on a very regular basis because he stops me outside my apartment almost every day to come up and check if he has any messages or to update his status.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the party and for those that are interested we are having a bit of a gathering afterwards at our place in the Santa Fe Lofts.
