DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — Downtown's favorite free concert series kicks off its 2009 season on Saturday night with composer Bear McCreary's live performance of the score from the television series "Battlestar Galactic."

Since 1986, Grand Performances has been bringing both lunchtime and evening shows to California Plaza's Watercourt stage.

Friday shows are the series' staples, and the calendar offers a show on that night every week through the end of August. Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays flesh out the schedule, filled with music from around the world.

Next Friday night, City of Los Angeles (COLA) Performing Arts Fellows Lionel Popkin, Bruce Bauman & Cheng-Chieh Yu come to the stage. Friday lunchtime shows kick off on July 10 with Rocky Dawuni.
