The Douglas Building will have its groove on this Friday night, as it hosts its first fashion show. The 70's funk-themed "The Groove Mixer and Showcase" features self-named designer K-Boogie's Boogiewear line of "urban couture." The show is mounted with help from Lot 44 Coffee's Julio Uriarte.

Lot 44 owner Ariel Graham has guided the project's use of the 2,500 square foot atrium. She wants to make the adjoining area accessible for performance and exhibitions.

Since its completion as part of the building's renovation, the atrium has been used for the occasional group art show during Art Walk nights, but Graham feels its been underutilized as a venue. "I can see hold a film festival, performance art, or even play readings," she says. "The important thing is the space is eclectic and shouldn't be pigeonholed."

The Groove Mixer and Showcase takes place on Friday, June 19, in the The Douglas Building Atrium (257 S. Spring). The mixer begins at 7:30 pm, and the fashion show starts at 8:30pm.

I love that Ed Fuentes photo of the atrium. Now that's photography. With that glass top, this atrium is such a beautiful takeoff from the Bradbury's historic and unique architecture. I can't believe that this atrium isn't bustling with more activity, or even tourist activity, or even just as a side step for coffee after a Bradbury tour.

The coffee costs nearly as much as mediocre wine so I don't go there. Plus it doesn't have much atmosphere.

Ariel is making a great effort to make this area a social destination and was the ground breaker retailer at the Douglas. I applaud her and we should all support her business. Maybe someday she will be open on weekends.
