Audience members were in a dancing mood last Wednesday as Brookfield's Summer on the Plaza got underway.
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — Brookfield Properties kicked off its Summer on the Plaza evening music series last week, as Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers inspired dancing on the plaza above 7+Fig.
The shows continue this week, with Texas Brown performing at 7+Fig @ Earnst & Young Plaza and Johnny Polanco Y Su Conjunto Amistad playing at Bank of America Plaza.
The series is part of the property company's arts>Brookfield Properties effort, which also includes the arts space inside the 7+Fig complex.
Shows take place weekly through the end of July, with Wednesday night performances at 7+Fig and Thursday's at Bank of America Plaza.

I was at the concert at 7+Fig. The band was great, the crowd was great, the atmosphere was great. I took some photographs, too. As I was leaving, on the Figueroa Street side, I was taking another photo. But I was told by a 7+Fig security guard that I was not allowed to take photos from the sidewalk because it is "private property." This is just not so, as photographers are allowed to take photos of any building or person visible from the street or the sidewalk. It's really too bad that Brookfield instructs its security personnel to lie to people and intimidate them. I offered the guard the opportunity to arrest me but he declined. I guess they know they are lying.

That is unfortunate Morgan, and I encountered the same thing. However, it was a security guard who informed me I was not allowed to take photos unless I WAS on the sidewalk.

Those security guards are woefully uninformed. It's perfectly legal to take photos of buildings from public sidewalks. We don't live in a police state.

Why not a dozen photogs gather on the sidewalk on Fig with the aim of producing a panorama. Add someone with a video to document the event. Sounds likes fun event. Maybe display the results in the 7+Fig gallery space.

Just a friendly reminder that the folks at arts>Brookfield Properties spend hundreds of thousands of dollars a year providing free arts programs for the public in four cities (LA, NYC, Toronto and Denver). The concert series is funded by the folks who operate 7 + Fig, and are offered to you, the public for free enjoyment. It is unfortunate that a security guard may have tried to feel important by directing Morgan #1 to stop taking photos, but let's remember the good that arts>Brookfield is contributing to beautiful downtown LA.
Upcoming concerts: Today, July 22 @ 7 + Fig: Sambaguru feat. Katia Moraes, Tomorrow, July 23 @ Bank of America Plaza: Stanley Jordan Trio... FREE!
