A potential jumper stands on the railing of the Wilshire overpass over the 110 freeway.

A potential jumper perched on the Wilshire overpass shut down traffic on the 110 freeway for over an hour today before being taken into police custody at 1:25pm.

Emergency responders scrambled to deploy airbags on the freeway below as the male stood on the railing above, appearing to taunt police with the threat to jump.

The individual was taken into custody after moving away from the center of the overpass and toward the Downtown side.

Traffic headed both directions on the 110 freeway came to a standstill during the incident, but is now slowly starting to move again.

As of 1:15pm, it looks like the 110 North is at a standstill as well.

Sarah B on August 04, 2009, at 01:27PM – #2

110 closed to all traffic in both directions now.

i work in the paul hasting's building downtown (with a view of the scene) and the entire area around the overpass is a mess.

the 101s looks backed up to the pass into the SF valley

Times are tough and getting tougher!! Too many downtown jumpers this year. Say a prayer to your Divine One to help us find our purpose and a way to get there.

mona on August 04, 2009, at 01:39PM – #6

maggie on August 04, 2009, at 01:43PM – #7

How come this isn't on the news????

nomad on August 04, 2009, at 01:43PM – #8

The police grabbed him and pulled him to safety...

PFont on August 04, 2009, at 01:44PM – #9

I'm on the 27th floor of 1055 W. 7th. Traffic on the 110 SB looks like it's backed up past USC...quite possibly all the way back to the 105. OUCH.

dani on August 04, 2009, at 01:45PM – #10

what a looser!!? are they gonna arrest him?

Dani,

I always found that when calling someone a loser, it is best to spell the word correctly. Otherwise, you run the risk of people thinking you are the loser.

SuperMan on August 04, 2009, at 02:20PM – #13

LOUD noises!

jb on August 04, 2009, at 02:34PM – #14

he was above the hilly and grassy side of the freeway. he couldn't have died (only if he hits his head).

nomad on August 04, 2009, at 02:38PM – #15

jb, he was moving around; but regardless, it wasn't that high at any point and there was a huge airbag underneath him when he was over the highway.

vic on August 04, 2009, at 04:25PM – #16

I was there stuck in traffic because this guy wanted to kill himself, what a damn waste of time. Just let the guy jump, sweep him of the floor with a big broom and let us get by.

Eric Richardson (@blogdowntown) on August 04, 2009, at 05:11PM – #17

jb: As was noted, he was originally over the 110 traffic lanes and had moved over by the time this photo was taken. I'd estimate the drop from the part over the traffic lanes is probably 25 - 30 feet.

Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!

Gosh, I hope they don't fence those bridges because of this ego-driven moron, I really enjoy satnding there and watching the cars pass, I guess I won't be able to do that anytime soon either...

In another topic, that who corrects grammar and spell mistakes in a blog is a bigger idiot than that who made the mistakes. My personal favorite is when bloggers get angry with each other and pull the "you don't even know how to spell therefore you are a classless uneducated person" but usually the responding blog entry has some kind of mistake of it's own, ahhhh this life is an ironic b*tch!

Bob on August 05, 2009, at 08:43AM – #19

Nothing wrong with correcting someone's spelling. Perhaps someone might learn something.

As long as one get's one's point across, that is the main thing, but what people write is a reflection of them.

Vero Queero on August 05, 2009, at 09:14AM – #20

There are more than spelling errors in this segment--grammar, tense, geography, etc. It's no wonder I don't read these more often. How embarrassing. As Bob writes, I hope someone learns something but probably not as most of these people are finished with their education. "common" - did they intend "c'mon"? "the 101s looks" ??? "did they caught him?" "how come" "110 SB" (assuming stands for south bound) "looks like it's backed up past USC" so wouldn't that be north bound? "looser" "that who corrects grammar"

Ginny-Marie Case on August 05, 2009, at 12:28PM – #21

I'm just embarrassed and disappointed by all the negative comments. I'm sure your tune would have changed if it was someone you knew. This is just another reason why we need more funding for mental health programs.

jb on August 05, 2009, at 02:13PM – #22

I am glad he is ok though but if he was in china he would have been pushed off.

The Dude on August 05, 2009, at 04:40PM – #23

Sorry, shutting down Los Angeles for more than an hour is more than wanting to kill yourself--that's attention whoring.

Randall BusTard on August 09, 2009, at 09:37AM – #24

I remain appalled that this jerk played his game and was captured when he should have exhibited some backbone and just jumped. I have no patience nor sympathy for those who play the "cry for help" game and bring commerce and tens of thousands of others' lives to a halt because they are having a tough time in life. Moreover, had the schmuck possessed some dignity he would have done the deed in private rather than play-acting in public.

I recall an similar albeit "successful" incident a few years ago. I was on NJT on the way back to NYC after a fortnight working in the sticks, er, Trenton. The train was suddenly stopped in red Hook. After a long and uninformative delay, we were told that a someone had committed suicide. The jerk was under the car in which I was riding. As such, we had to remain on the train until another was brought up along side us. We were then told to exit our train and board the one on the adjacent track. We were also told to NOT touch both trains simultaneously lest we be fatally electrocuted (no, there was no third rail, and I have not researched why NJT and the local police told us to be so careful). Obviously, both tracks were blocked for about two hours, which held up the entire line across the state.

Then there was the asshole Juan Manuel Alvarez here in Los Angeles who allowed a Metrolink train to hit his motor vehicle because at the last moment he decided he did not want to commit suicide. His actions killed 11 people and remains the second deadliest incident in the history of Metrolink. I believe that the families and loved ones of those killed should be allowed to have some private time with Alvarez, and that asshole's assets be sold to pay for some of the better-built tools from the Spanish Inquisition that should be used on him.

Now this moron holds up half of downtown because he's upset with life. The LAPD should have tasered or knocked him down with beanbags or batons rather than playing with him while he pranced round on the railing. (If he wanted to die, what's a bit of tissue-shattering pain so as to get the feel of the real thing?) Seriously, why is it that a majority of one can create such a hindrance?

Perhaps next time one of the office workers might lend a helping hand by pitching a bottle out the window or over the roof to help such a fool on his way out.

Yeah, right. on August 09, 2009, at 10:56AM – #25

To Mr. Tard. Not that I disagree with your comments on this story, but I find it contradictory that you voice this sentiment:"I have no patience nor sympathy for those who play the "cry for help" game and bring commerce and tens of thousands of others' lives to a halt because they are having a tough time in life."

Yet, you want to bash commentors on the Teen Slain thread who also express impatience with drug-addicted jaywalkers, public drinkers, and public urinators while they hold up traffic, and civilized street life because they are "having a tough time in life." Perhaps like you stated with the jumper, one of the drivers at rush hour who these bums hold up should just hit him and put his ass out of his misery.

Like another poster so aptly commented, "Me thinks Mr. Bustard doth protest too much." It's obvious you just get off on your own public blatherings, the substance of which should be questioned.

THANK YOU, Vero Queero! Well said.

Purple Haze on August 09, 2009, at 09:51PM – #27

Well, I can remember the time when a old guy used to stand on the south side of 4th Street during evening rush hour with his whank hanging out and down to his knee caps, not far east of L.A. Street.

He didn't have to urinate. His size alone generated immediate congestion all across Bunker Hill. For some reason, the LAPD was nowhere to be found. One glance and they would have roared!

Talk about holding up traffic....

Randall BusTard on August 12, 2009, at 12:48AM – #28

Yeah, right:

Do you mean to state that all suicide jumpers are street jaywalkers?

Before you answer, please drop the puerile moniker. Anyone can be bold while blathering anonymously from behind a monitor.

No one on the thread to which you allude bothered to address my finer points, sop why should I bother granting you that favour here? There was even some schmuck (nameless, of course) who clearly impugned my past even as he failed to accuse an alleged LAPD officer of either libel (regarding LA CAN) or impersonating a Los Angeles Police Department officer——for no other reason than the "cop" under review held an agreeable position.

To be frank, I find your argument a poor one as well as one, were it not for the anonymous and expedient medium of the Internet, World Wide Web and Blogosphere, would not exist outside of a rather small circle of acquaintances. That goes for quite a few of the comments found on the threads in which I have recently commented.

Now, i you have yet to understand how pointless is your query, and how obviously personal is your attack, then answer me again: are you willing to state that a suicide jumper is the same a a street jaywalker? If you still fail to understand this, I suggest you reëvaulate making anonymous comments.
