Abner Mares lands a shot to the side of the head of Carlos Fulgencio during Thursday's Fight Night Club at Club Nokia.

Bantamweight Abner Mares was a solid winner in the main event of Thursday night's Fight Night Club at Club Nokia.

The event, put on by AEG and Golden Boy Promotions, offered boxing fans seven fights, four of which were televised in a two-hour live broadcast on cable sports network Versus.

Mares, who lives in Hawaiian Gardens, stopped Dominican Carlos Fulgencio in the sixth round with a left hook to the body. Eight rounds were scheduled, but Mares made it clear early on that he wasn't going to let it go the distance.

In earlier bouts, David Rodela of Oxnard defeated Gamalier Rodriguez of Puerto Rico by unanimous decision in a six rounder. Featherweight Ricky Lopez, also of Oxnard, won a four round decision against John Wambash, knocking him down four times in the process. David Gaspar defeated Sergio Espinoza in a six round bout, and Juan Heraldez stopped Luis Tapia in the second round of a fight scheduled to go four.

Fight Night Club returns to Club Nokia on September 24 for the fourth in what was announced as a four-part series.

Two interesting Downtown facts worth noting:

All three major venues at L.A. Live have hosted boxing. Staples Center's boxing pedigree is pretty well known, and will host Vitali Klitschko v. Cristobal Arreola in a heavyweight bout on September 26. The 7100-seat Nokia Theatre hosted a heavyweight fight on March 27, as Eddie Chambers defeated Stan Peters. The Club Nokia series kicked off in June.

Both AEG and Golden Boy are Downtown companies. AEG, of course, is based in offices atop the L.A. Live entertainment complex. Golden Boy Promotions owns the Golden Boy Building at 626 Wilshire (Wilshire and Hope), and bases its operations out of that location.

Fascinating pictures! I like how they capture the action and emotion of the matches.
