Central Area Weekly Update: August 29, 2009

Each week Captain Blake Chow, Commanding Officer of LAPD's Central Division, sends out an email to the community. Captain Chow has agreed to let blogdowntown bring his emails to our readers.

As of August 29, 2009 Central reported the following crime numbers. All numbers are YTD unless otherwise noted.

There was only one robbery reported in Skid Row this week and no aggravated assaults.

  • Violent Crime down 5 percent. (or 33 crimes less than last year)
  • Homicides are up by 1
  • Rapes are down 25 percent
  • Robbery is down 3 percent
  • Agg Assaults down 5 percent (15 less than last year)

  • Property Crime is down 8 percent

  • Burglary is down 21 percent
  • Grand Theft Auto is down 29 percent
  • Burgl from Motor vehicle is down 5 percent
  • Personal Theft is down 1 percent

Total Part I Crimes are down 7 percent for the division.

The only pattern noted this week was a few stolen vehicles and burglary from motor vehicles in the northern end of the division. This is the are bounded by the 110 Fwy, Lilac Terrace and Sunset Blvd.

Keep an eye on your bikes, folks. I just had mine stolen today at 12:45 PM on the SE corner of Flower and 9th St (right across from Ralphs). It was the middle of the day, and the bike was chained. Unfortunately, it was a cable lock (which I now know is useless). I never expected I'd be running down Flower St trying to catch bike thieves. The cops I spoke to said property crimes are up.
