DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — Barriers were removed from the perimeter of the City's new Police Administration Building on Tuesday, opening up to the public the structure's abundant landscaping, including a nearly one-acre lawn adjacent to 2nd Street.
After years of construction, the visual effect is striking.
2nd Street, for years hemmed in by a construction wall that hugged up against the curb, looks like a brand new place. Even the view walking up Spring street is transformed, with a dead end wall replaced by a leafy, tree-lined passageway.
The 10-story headquarters is the centerpiece of a $437 million project that also includes the nearby Motor Transport Division complex on Main street and a parking garage on 1st street. 2300 LAPD officers and civilian employees will work inside the building.
A grand opening for the facility will take place in October.

Love this building. Your pictures of the grounds are quite nice. Might have to ride my bike over soon and take a peek.

I know there were a lot of issues with the decision to put this building here, but I do think they did a great job with it. It's great to have this sidewalk freed again. Now we just need the sidewalk by the parking garage opened up.

Now, curb your dog! I know that most dog owners do curb their dogs, but there is a slight problem over on 2nd Street right next to the CalTrans Building. The dirt around that area is filled with dog crap (maybe some human crap thrown in). I'm guessing that a resident of the Higgins might be walking their dog over there, and under that nice, shady canopy of trees is letting their dog do it's thing, and then just continuing on every morning. Who knows. Let's not let that happen to this area.

The new LAPD Headquarters has some great skateboard ramps. How will the kids interact with the police? Perhaps this will encourage a skateboard park on the westside concrete pad off First Street, between Broadway and Spring, across from "Times Mirror Square."
