LAPD officers congregate on Main street between 7th and 8th before moving south toward the Huntington Hotel.

(Updated 11am) The search for an assault suspect near the Huntington Hotel late Monday night involved more than a dozen LAPD units, including at least three K9 units and a helicopter.

Just after midnight, the suspect used bodily force to take $100 from a victim at 7th and Main. The suspect fled down Main into the Huntington and managed to elude a lengthy search.

LAPD air support circled the intersection of 8th and Main for more than an hour as officers encircled the area and prepared to enter in search of their suspect.

Main and 8th streets were both closed while the search took place.

Captain Blake Chow said this morning that one suspect was detained, but that a field show up failed to ID him as the assailant. The department's investigation continues.

I don't believe seriously. I saw officers talking to someone who was sitting on the curb holding a towel to his face. There didn't seem to be any urgency about needing treatment.

Some tips:

-keep your head on a swivel. Always "check six", that is, always swing your head side to side a bit and check behind you to see if someone is sneaking up. -when walking past someone questionable on the sidewalk, try to stay close to the street, that way you have an escape route and can run towards cars for help if need be. Don't let them corner you against buildings. -people seem to be working in pairs. I've had people try to get me to stop and talk/ask for change right next to an alley or dark spot where someone else was waiting to sneak up while I was pre-occupied. -Say hello to them first and keep your eyes on them the whole time. Let them know you see them and are prepared to react.

Just my own personal methods. Act secure and you should be secure.

one more tip: don't walk on main street alone at night. and don't walk on main street south of 7th at night AT ALL. i had a long chat with an LAPD sergeant in front of bark avenue a week ago, and this was his very advice. it's SO much better than it was when i moved here 4 1/2 years ago...but it's not THAT much better.

sounds safe enough to me, just look at the police response! That victim should feel really lucky! Better than any response I ever got - in ANY city. That said - walk all you want down there - if you don't how play bait how will they ever catch the crooks?

We need more cops downtown especially after dark when the freaks come out in full force. Another tip, carry something with you! A gun (legally of course), a knife, pepper spray or anything that will help to protect you, especially if you are a woman! I keep myself protected night and day in the best neighborhoods and the worst. Let these bastards know that you have a nice surprise waiting for them.
