DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Police Department will officially open its new 500,000 square foot headquarters across the street from City Hall on Saturday, just days before Chief William Bratton leaves the department for the private sector.
A ribbon-cutting for the Police Administration Building will take place at 10am, after which the public will be invited to tour the building and its grounds.
The headquarters building at 100 S. Spring is the centerpiece of a $437-million building project that also includes the Motor Transport Division facility on Main street and a parking garage off of 1st street.
The park space on the site opened to the public on September 16. A nearly one-acre lawn abuts 2nd street, while a 75-foot strip of landscaping lines the building's Spring street side.
Along that stretch sit eight new pieces of public art. Artist Peter Shelton says that he'll be on-hand Saturday, but "I don't expect the Chief will introduce me." The L.A. Times' Steve Lopez quoted Bratton earlier this week as saying that the works looked like "cow-splat."

I wish the "cow splat" description would have been more ..descriptive.
My favorite assessment of modern art is still when Marcel Duchamp's "Nude Descending a Staircase" was called "an explosion in a shingle factory". That insult is now 97 years old.
Bratton needed to incorporate a strong verb into his description if he wanted his comment to be remembered years from now.

Please name our new facility: LOS ANGELES COMMUNITY POLICE DEPARTMENT.
It should not be named after any specific person. Los Angeles Police work to keep our community safe. After a while, no one will care about a politician whose name in posted on a building. Sandy Carter-Nixon Los Angeles, CA
