Beck Sworn In Ed Fuentes

New LAPD Chief Charlie Beck is sworn in for a second time by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

All the brass and whistles were present at the new Police Administration Building today for the morning swearing-in of Chief Charlie Beck, 56, the second since he was approved by City Council on November 17 and took his official oath in chambers.

Today is more inaugural ceremony, and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's introduction of Beck included enough community stumping to give the resemblance of a political campaign.

With City Hall in the background, elected officials and LAPD brass were lead to the stage by the bagpipers of the Los Angeles Police Emerald Society, while guests in the courtyard waited for Beck to take his oath.

On each floor of the 10-story LAPD Headquarters, civil staff and officers took a spots to watch over the courtyard, through the vast windows.

Joining Beck on the stage were family, including his father, George, a retired LAPD Deputy Chief, who pinned the badge on his son, the 56th LAPD chief.

"It's not a job by one man," said Beck during his remarks, saying that maintaining the reforms and changes that lead to the drop in crime is the obligation of every officer. And it can be done, he assured the crowd, joking that "If I can have Gates and (former State Senator) Tom Hayden on the same stage with no untold drama," the next 5 years could prove to be easy.

Of course, it won't be, as budget restrictions were a key topic in comments by Villaraigosa and City Council president Eric Garcetti.

The ceremony was the start of a long day of celebrations, as Beck is scheduled for a night of dinners in his honor, and will manage to squeeze in an appearance at L.A. Live for the lighting of the Christmas tree.
