LAPD Seeks Man Who Robbed Credit Union Across from Its HQ
Southland Credit Union
Surveillance photos show a man who yesterday robbed the Southland Credit Union at 2nd and Spring.
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — Surveillance photos were released this morning showing a man who yesterday robbed the Southland Credit Union at 2nd and Spring, just steps away from LAPD's new headquarters.
The black male suspect handed the teller a demand note at 10:25am. He then placed the cash -- including an exploding dye pack -- in a polka dot backpack and rode away on a mountain bike.
The bicycle was recovered minutes later in Little Tokyo, but the suspect, dubbed by blogdowntown the "Polka Dot Backpack Bandit," is at large. Lt. Paul Vernon of Central Division this morning urged anyone who recognizes the suspect to notify the LAPD or FBI.
The bank was also robbed on August 24, though police say that robbery was by a different man.

This guy has got to be the smoothest thief of all times. I didn't know it was so easy to rob a bank across from the LAPD... (LOL at the mountainbike)

Speaking of smooth: What kind of chutzpah do you have to present yourself in front of a camera? Any update on an exploded dye pack? In re the mountain bike: had it not been for the recent rain, I wouldn't have brought mine in for shelter. Otherwise I'd be hightailing it to my Little Tokyo home to make sure MY BIKE wasn't used as a getaway!!

Nice to see robbers going green, riding a get away bike instead of driving off. Wonder if the news channels would televise a high speed bicycle chase?
