Thanks for a Great 2009, Downtown

Kobe Bryant carries the NBA Championship trophy during a June parade. The championship and its aftermath was one of Downtown's biggest 2009 stories.
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — As we near the last hours of 2009, we here at blogdowntown wanted to take a moment to say thank you to all of you who made this site a part of your daily routine over the past year. The last 365 days were by every measure the best of our short five-year history.
While we wait for the clock to ring in 2010, take a look back at some of Downtown's hottest topics over the past 12 months.
In 2009, we ran 961 stories, and totaled up they contained a touch over 317,500 words. That's up from 825 stories and 250,000 words in 2008.
As I look back, though, what I think I remember most are the words that you all wrote on two stories, both of which talked about someone who had died.
In April, longtime DLANC volunteer Lesley Taplin was killed in an accident on the 101 freeway. Over the course of 40 comments, readers and family shared their memories of a woman who had touched so many lives Downtown and elsewhere.
In November, that same sense of community was clear in the comments left on the story of a young woman who committed suicide on Spring Street. Though most didn't know the woman who had died, the experience was shared among those who lived and worked in a deceptively dense block of the Historic Core.
I'm fond of saying that Downtown is just a small town with big buildings. Even as the neighborhood grows, events like these two show that to still be true.

Ohh...FIRST!!!
Let me be the first to thank BlogDowntown for all the neighborhood coverage this year, and the past. I think it is important for all of us to remember that BlogDowntown is a labor of pure non-profit community love. I'm sure all of us notice the lack of popup advertising, flyer overs, and crazy flash bits.
Here's to twenty-ten, more articles, more comments!

And here's to hoping for a more positive year and prosperous decade for downtown.

Since moving to downtown 5 months ago blogdowntown has been our main source of information, news, and connection to the "small town with big buildings". Thank you - and here's to a blessed 2010!

And thank you, blogdowntown, for keeping us informed about what goes on in our small town urban life! Your stories on the minutiae of life here, which the rest of Greater LA has no knowledge of (or interest in), are more applicable to our world than what the usual media carries, and make our experience of living here richer and more complete. I also love the historical stories that help us reconnect with the past of this beautiful and dynamic area.
I look forward to more, more, more! of all this in 2010. Happy new year to you (and all your hardworking, unpaid staff).

Thank you for helping me stay connected to my neighborhood for the past two years. Hopefully I can convey this same sentiment for years to come.

The headline reads "Thanks for a Great 2009, Downtown", but it should really say "Thanks Eric Richardson for a Great Blogdowntown". Without you, we wouldn't know half of what is going on in the community. Please know that we all understand what an incredible amount of work Blogdowntown is and that we all appreciate all the effort you put into it. Thank you for a great 2009, and we all look forward to a well-informed 2010.
