Good Morning, 2010

Day one of 2010 in Downtown Los Angeles.

As out-of-town guests began their trek to Pasadena and the last stragglers from the party scene found a place to crash, the first dawn of 2010 broke over Downtown Los Angeles just a touch before 7am.

January 1 is a day for resolutions. On this first day of the year, what are yours, either personally or for Downtown?

Going from whiskey to wine to whiskey to some foo-foo appletini drink to beer to wine really sucks. My resolution is to never do it again and probably stay in next time.

I'm very disappointed with the crowd turnout at LA Live. Does not even come close to rivaling Times Square and the club scene was dull. Drinks were subpar, Partygoers were left wondering whether it was best to stay home. No real excitement in the atmosphere.

We plan to continue the "tourist in our own city" theme of living here, and search out more new-to-us places and experiences! There is so much we haven't done yet: restaurants to try, old buildings to explore, events to attend. (We are nearly finishing our 2nd year of living here, and starting to fall into a bit of a rut of familiar places and favorite restaurants already.)

BTW, the Biltmore's Gallery Bar was a wonderful place to see the new year in (and we didn't have to drive home afterwards: bonus!)

I resolve to make no resolutions for 2010 and to ignore the media's attention to New Year's resolutions...oh wait, too late, I just broke them both! :)

Move out of City Lofts.

I resolve to try my best to fall back in love with the neighborhood. It's been a tough year, but walking around this week I'm starting to remember what it was about DTLA that I loved to begin with. I'm also going to redouble my efforts to shop locally, support our small businesses and introduce others to living and playing here.

@Whitman Lam Don't fell bad, even Gay & Straight West Hollywood was a Drag this year. No pun intended.

I would like to stay in downtown (been here 2 yrs), but I can't seem to find a place to rent that is less than $1300 a month. I'm living in a miniscule SRO with no kitchen (which is hell), but am waiting for something I can afford. Every unit locally is priced either for the yuppie/trust fund crowd or for the poor with an income restriction. There seems to be nothing for us in between. If it doesn't happen this year, I may have to move to the west side where my job is.

To allow myself to intrinsically enjoy DTLA and to learn to enjoy the really weird odd things that insist on presenting themselves. And ... to not let that smell of urine/pot/rotten food/bus exhaust ruin a perfectly good day outside.

Jasmijn, I love your "tourist in our own city" idea. I think I'm gonna borrow it for my own resolution. So much to do in this L.A.! You know, I've never even been to Pink's?

I wanna steal the tourist in our city idea too! I resolve to do a "try something new" every month.

Natalie, skip Pink's and go to Wurstkuche instead, Pinks is only good if you're leaving some Hollywood bar drunk at 2am (and need to wash the stand-in-line-for-nothing-young-hollywood-scenster-appletini taste out of your mouth). I also like downtown's Weeneez for a quick bite during Art Walk. Both Weeneez and Wurstkuche have veggie dogs which is a big plus for me.

Benjamin, is something wrong w/ City Lofts?

Yes, "E.", there is something wrong with City Lofts.

The patch of filth in the parking garage that has been there since at least Sunday 12/27 when we notified the on-duty security guard who was posted in the garage of it. We followed up with two telephone calls (one on 12/28, the other on 12/30) to the property management but to this day it remains uncleaned.

Property owners have a right to manage, or mismanage, their properties to the limits of the law. They have the right to spend their rental income on new Bentleys too. But that does not mean tenants who pay their rent on time have to continue renting from such owners.

We've rented a 1,000 square foot unit in Cityt Lofts for the last 45 months and have always paid our rent in full and on time (in fact, we usually pay early). We're looking for rental management that appreciates that and these guys are not. So why keeping spending our hard earned money each month here only to be ignored when we bring righteous issues to their attention? Why go through the headache of repair and deduct? If I'm going to have headache, it's going to be about finding a new place and moving.

There are other issues, past and present, but this is 'the one' that put us over the tipping point and has prompted us to move out of City Lofts in 2010.

I am very pleased to report that the patch of vomit in the parking garage of City Lofts has finally been cleaned -- only 18 days after we first reported it to property management!
