Thursday: LAFD to Defend Broomball Crown Against New Challengers, the Derby Dolls

A member of the LAFD broomball team works against two LAPD defenders in the 2009 tournament held at Pershing Square.

The defending champion Los Angeles Fire Department broomball team will put its title on the line Thursday when it returns to the Pershing Square ice to face a new challenger, the L.A. Derby Dolls.

The 9am contest is free and open to the public, but donations are requested to benefit the LAFD Widows, Orphan and Disabled Fireman’s Fund.

The hockey-like game features a simpler array of equipment. Players will take to the ice in tennis shoes, armed with taped up brooms and helmets. The game rules outlaw checking, blocking or hitting, but that doesn't mean there's any lack of excitement.

The Fire Department comes in seasoned, having scored a 12-5 defeat of the Los Angeles Police Department in the 2009 tournament.

The Pershing Square ice rink is open through January 18.
