Piecing Together Hotel Fig's Ads

Over a year's worth of ads are displayed in bits and scraps on the side of the Hotel Figueroa. The Kung Fu Panda ad, the last to be painted on the side of the hotel, was removed on December 2, 2008.
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — To look at the south face of the Hotel Figueroa this week is to take an archeological journey through 14 months of advertising history. The three vertical walls of the hotel's southern face used to be home to large paintings that were as much mural as ad, but since December 2, 2008, contractors hired by CBS Outdoor have been layering vinyl ads on the space instead.
This past weekend, the ads all came down, leaving scraps of a number of recent campaigns. Visible are spots from Michelin and Target, among others.
Behind them all is the remnants of the building's last painted ad, a promotion for the DVD release of "Kung Fu Panda."

I wonder how thick the side of the wall must get with 14 months worth of advertisement on the side of it.

I don't think it would get super-thick (it was probably only six or eight signs), but I bet the weight starts to add up.

Were the ads being removed on purpose or is the weather taking them down?
