Corinne Bailey Rae kicked off her U.S. tour on Tuesday night with a show inside the formerly sacred confines of Vibiana, once the Main street home of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

The show, a benefit for public radio station KCRW, sold out its roughly 1,000 tickets almost instantly when they went on sale to the station's members on March 2.

The setting inside the white cathedral interior was striking. The UK chanteuse glided barefoot wearing a black dress on plush carpet placed there for the show, her striking form set off by the white altar, warmed by lit candles. Colors inside the venue changed with the mood of each song.

While Bailey Rae's performance at Coachella 2010 will no doubt still feel intimate, it will be hard to out-do the Downtown setting that framed her performance style.

So comfortable was the setting, perhaps, that her performance was more than the usual personal confession that drives the singer songwriter's music. It may have been a natural fit, as Rae told KCRW Music Director Jason Bentley during a mid-set interview that she began her singing career singing in churches.

The pre-intermission set included "Are You Here" and "Love On Its Way," while the performance after the interview was highlighted by soulful acoustic version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing."

"An Evening With Corinne Bailey Rae" will be broadcast on today's edition of Morning Becomes Eclectic at 11:15am.

Extra Note: Concert for KCRW stage by Spaceland Productions, lighting design by Sean Forrester
