Galleries to Share Space at 5th and Main

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — While curator Edgar Varela was excited on Monday to announce that he had finalized an agreement to share Bert Green Fine Art's 5th and Main gallery space, he was also a little sad. "I hate to leave the Arts District," explained the proprietor of Edgar Varela Fine Arts, which had been located at 542 S. Alameda.
The two galleries will remain independent. "Its very simple. Edgar will get one side of the gallery, and I will get the other," Green explained. The windows will get similarly split, with one front space going to each.
Varela, who is known for his events as well as his gallery, will continue the Art Walk afterhours "Garden Party" in the Arts District, at 209 S. Garey.
Green was the founder of the Downtown Art Walk, and the 5th street block his gallery anchors still sees some of the event's heaviest foot traffic. The paired galleries plan to maintain the shorter Art Walk hours that Green has kept in recent months, closing at 6pm.
Varela plans to open his gallery in its new location on May 13.
