A favorite lunchtime spot in the Jewelry District is now open for dinner. After being in business a little more than a year, Tulip Cafe has extended its hours to 9pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The small mediterranean restaurant is tucked down St. Vincent Court off 7th Street and is the first in the alley to try nighttime hours.

On a recent Saturday night visit, it was easy to be reminded of a European cafe or a restaurant in San Francisco. The alley provided the setting for some charming outdoor seating, and owner Kacin Celik was quick to make us feel like we were dining in a friend's home, greeting us at the door and answering any questions about the menu.

Offerings range from seafood dishes like ahi tuna and striped bass to pastas, mediterranean specials and grilled items. Entrees range from 10 - 16 dollars -- most on the lower side -- and portions are generous.

I ordered the Mahi Mahi with garlic mashed potatoes, asparagus and cabbage salad. I also sampled both the bean salad and tomato salad and had a great piece of tiramisu for dessert. If you're too lazy to get out, they also offer free local delivery.

Celik says that he isn't quite done sprucing the place up for dinner. This week he plans to hang strings of lights across the alley for added ambiance.

Tucked away in the alley, Tulip Cafe is easy to miss. Once there, though, that privacy makes for a great secret spot.

Tulip Cafe / 628 St. Vincent Court / 213-622-5621 / Open Mon - Sat, 11am - 4pm; Thurs - Sat, 11am - 9pm
