LAPD Sgt Kris Werner takes over Evan Shafran’s table at Pete's Café during today's "Tip-A-Cop" fundraiser.

Some of LAPD's finest gathered at Pete's Cafe today to raise money for the Special Olympics in the first of two "Tip-a-Cop" fundraisers scheduled for Downtown.

The officers took orders and waited on tables at the popular dining spot.

The service surprised some who arrived for lunch.

"Well, it's the safest place to eat today," said one diner, who left a 25% tip.

Despite the economy, the waiter/cops managed to raise almost $1,300 today, some coming from an undisclosed donor says Sgt Kris Werner. "It was successful considering the times," say Werner, who first brought LAPD to Pete's Cafe in 2007. "I tell you, [Officer] Mike Fernandez and Jack Ritcher, along with Sgt Pete Foster, really took the reigns on this."

The next event will test out dinner hours as Fernandez and Richter take "Tip-A-Cop" to the Arts District's Wurstkuche on Monday, June 7, from 6 to 10:30pm.

Both fundraisers lead to a torch run that will pass through Downtown on Thursday, June 10. The five day journey starts in the South Bay on June 7, winding throughout the city before ending up at the opening ceremonies of the Special Olympic of Southern California Summer Games on Saturday, June 12, in Long Beach.
