7-Eleven Headed to 9th and Broadway

Downtown's third 7-Eleven appears headed for the 9th street side of this building at 9th and Broadway.

Downtown's third 7-Eleven appears to be headed for a former Payless shoe store at 9th and Broadway.

A mailing went out this week alerting nearby residents and business owners to a hearing on the convenience chain's proposed permit to sell alcohol. That application was filed on April 14, and will be heard on Wednesday, July 7.

The new store at 124 W. 9th will occupy 2,815 square feet on the ground floor of the three-story building on the southeast corner of the intersection. 24-hour operation is proposed, with alcohol sales between 6am and 2am.

Franchisee Matt Mattu last summer told the neighbhorhood council's planning committee that he holds an option to open four more stores Downtown. His first opened at 7th and Olive in 2007, followed by a store at 5th and Broadway that opened in September of 2009.

Across the street from the new store are the Eastern Columbia building's 147 condos, soon to be joined by 82 rental units in the Blackstone Lofts.

While 7-11 isn't the epitome of class I do welcome it. 8th and Broadway is quite nice (at least on the Orpheum side) so I'd like to see that spill over to 9th as well...someone needs to be buy up the UA Theatre, loft and office the top, and open it as a legit theatre with stores below. Then I will be happy :).

Great. A new place to buy cheap alcohol downtown. I know it's a vacant storefront being filled, but it's a shame they couldn't find something more community friendly. :-S

No one says just because it's a 7-11 it has to be an easy place to buy alcohol, that's what the hearing is all about. Now is the time to ask for all sorts of conditions to be attached to their permit and also ask that it be reviewed every two years so you don't have to worry about having to have them declared a nuisance before getting their permit revoked.

Things that I've seen asked for in the past (and agreed to by liquor stores) are:

  • They can’t sell fortified liquor
  • No sales of airline size bottles
  • No sales of individual cigarettes
  • Liquor sales must end by midnight
  • Graffiti must be removed within 24 hours
  • Beer may only be sold in standard, commercially available, multipacks (i.e. 6-packs or 4 packs in the case of some premium beers)

You get the idea. Here's the chance to add the conditions to make them a good neighbor.

I'm glad this is opening where it is because convenience stores are needed in close proximity to residents. Think of the variety of businesses (including liquor stores, delis, bakeries, etc.) in a Manhattan neighborhood. This is positive organic growth that is welcome downtown.

Can one of the conditions that we apply be that it not open as a 7-11. Between this and the new Walgreen's on 7th, we'll wipe out this cities pesky historic character in no time.
