Mignon Adds Wine and Cheese to 6th Street's Nightlife Row
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES — A block of 6th street between Main and Los Angeles has quickly become the place to go for nightlife. The newest offering, Mignon Wine & Cheese Bar, opened last week, joining The Association, Cole's, Blu LA Cafe, Las Perlas and Babycakes.
Just 600 square feet, the petite wine bar is the creation Santos Uy and Danny Kronfli, the duo who operate the more casual Bacaro Wine Bar near USC. They hope to see Mignon known for its focus on European and "Old Country" wines.
The interior design, created by Ana Henton of Echo Park's Mass Architecture, tips a hat to the spot's former life as a tailor's shop with chandeliers made from clothes hangers, and neckties both real and drawn accenting the walls.
The food menu is simple, with meat and cheese selections served on small plates. Eventually sandwiches will be served. Co-owner Uy says they just got a new panini press, "and it's still smoking.." Once its been property broken-in -- likely a month or two -- they will add sandwiches. Lunch is planned sometime within the next year.
With the focus on wine, it should be no surprise that beer selections aren't extensive. There's currently just one on the menu: Fischer Bière Blonde, a French Pale Lager. "We may add three or four more beers.. possibly a sour beer or a Hitachino.." Uy says.
The bar's lease in the Pacific Electric building was signed one year ago today. Uy was already a Downtown resident, but moved a few blocks north to get closer to the new space.
Hours are currently 5pm to midnight. The wine bar's website and phone are works in progress -- as are other final touches inside the space -- but readers and fans can find them on facebook and twitter.

It would be nice if they didn't add a sour beer. I vote Anchor Steam!

I tried Mignon last night with a friend. Santos was pleasant and helpful. The menu was somewhat simple, not many choices, but everything was delicious.
