Rendering of the planned 106-unit New Genesis Apartments, scheduled to rise next to the Regent Theatre on Main between Winston and 5th.

Three months after a ceremonial groundbreaking was held at the future site of the New Genesis Apartments, demolition work is finally underway at the empty Genesis Hotel.

The $22.3-million affordable housing project, located on the east side of Main street between Winston and 5th, will provide 106 units of housing, some of which will be reserved for artists making up to 60% of the area median income. The design by Killefer Flammang Architects includes 98 efficiency units and eight one-bedroom apartments.

Also included are a pair of retail spaces, one of which will house a restaurant.

The structure is being developed by the Skid Row Housing Trust and is scheduled to open in 2011.
