Looking for Last Minute Fireworks Near Downtown?

While Downtown doesn't really have a July 4th fireworks display to call its own -- especially this year, with a big cutback in the Dodgers' shows -- that doesn't mean that the Downtowner looking for a light show is out of luck.

The 8th Annual Fireworks Extravaganza takes place on July 4th in Exposition Park, just two miles south of Downtown.

The event, sponsored by 8th District Councilman Bernard Parks and Cultural Affairs, begins with a small concert on the lawn east of the Los Angeles Coliseum and an afternoon of programs at the California African American Museum.

People begin gathering early to set up blankets and lawn chairs last year, many holding picnics before the firework display were set off from inside the Coliseum.

There is no admission to the Coliseum itself, but plenty of vantage points are available around the historic facility.

Parking is also free, and drivers are encouraged to enter the parking lot at Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and Hoover. From Downtown, an easier option may be Metro's 81 bus, which runs along Hill down to 8th before cutting over to Figueroa. A walk a few blocks north of Exposition Blvd. may be in order afterward to clear congestion and catch the bus.

A list of other shows around L.A. can be found at Fireworks Shows in Los Angeles County.
